Falcons Weekly Recap: Week 8

The roller coaster season of the Springfield Falcons careened along this weekend with the Falcons dropping three straight games to fall into the cellar of the Northeast Division of the AHL.

Especially troublesome for the Falcons, the three losses all came at the hands of divisional rivals; in essence turning each of the games into a four pointer.

Worse still, the Falcons were the only team in the division who didn't register a point in the standings for the week. One week ago, the Falcons were running second in the division, one point behind Connecticut.

This week, the standings look like this:

AHL NORTHEAST DIVISION STANDINGS (as of 11/28/11):

Team GP W L OTL SOL PTS GF GA
Connecticut (NYR) 19 11 5 1 2 25 58 58
Bridgeport (NYI) 21 10 7 3 1 24 66 70
Adirondack (PHI) 19 11 7 0 1 23 62 54
Albany (NJD) 20 10 7 2 1 23 51 61
Springfield (CBJ) 20 10 10 0 0 20 60 58

This week the Falcons, despite their 0 for 3, really deserved a better fate. Friday night's game in Glens Falls was the only one that they were out of by the third period. Even then, Phantoms goalie Michael Leighton stood on his head, stopping 43 of 44 shots.

The Falcons faced good goaltending all weekend. It started with Leighton, continued with Chad Johnson of the Connecticut Whale on Saturday and finished up with Keith Kinkaid for the Albany Devils on Sunday.

The combined shots on goal across the three games infer that the Falcons weren't playing badly, but just were really not catching any breaks at all. For the three weekend games, the Falcons outshot their opponents by a margin of 110 to 71.

The three opposing goalies mentioned above recorded a combined save percentage of .955 against Springfield.

The Falcons goaltending, which has been brilliant at times, was ordinary at best this weekend. Manny Legace and Danny Taylor combined for an .845 save percentage, pretty much telling the story of "what happened" this weekend.
