Shrapnel - 11/28/11
Happy Monday! Will it please finally get cold? It's November 28th and we've been getting rained on for two days straight. A dignified climate would start turning some of this into proper snow by now.
We've got our recap from last night for you, plus additional coverage at Puck-Rakers, DBJ, Columbus Wired, and the Dispatch.
BREAKING NEWS: The Washington Capitals have fired Bruce Boudreau and have named former Capital Dale Hunter as the new head coach. Credit to Nick Kypreos of Sportsnet for breaking the rumor last night, though it's interesting to see the team was denying the move would happen yesterday. Maybe George McPhee got lessons in rumor control from Gene Smith.
Boudreau suddenly being an option on the table might cause several struggling teams (including, I admit, Columbus) to re-evaluate their coaching. Don't be shocked if we see him behind an NHL bench in the near future.
Lori Schmidt reports the Jackets could suffer another major loss at the end of the month.
Over at Backhand Shelf, Ms. Conduct is sharing her Thanksgiving leftovers, while Puck Daddy looks at Kari Lehtonen's groin injury, speculates about a Jarome Iginla trade scenario, and highlights some water bottle antics with the Calgary captain.
Back at the Dispatch, Shawn Mitchell has a look at the Russell / Nikitin trade from both sides, while Michael Arace talked subtexts and spice.
Finally, Alison has a cautionary tale up at Dark Blue Jacket with some good food for thought.
Have a good morning!

blues fan checking in
I’m pretty surprised to see Nikitin playing such an immediately prominent role with the Blue Jackets.. What is the fan opinion of him so far? I see that he’s been netting some assists (on the pp).. I think the issue with him on the Blues had more to do with his youth and decision-making, especially turnovers. (we already have enough young defensemen to develop)
Also, I’m curious what Columbus fans’ opinions of Kris Russell were… he’s been nothing but good so far for the Blues.

We’re pretty pleased with Nikitin so far – he’s looked good with his use of the body and made some excellent passing plays. I’m a little surprised about the decision making knock, because he’s risen nicely to the occasion so far.
A lot of fans still really like Kris Russell, but his offense wasn’t outweighing his problems on defense, and he was having a lot of issues with his play away from the puck.
I hope that both guys continue to do well – it’d be nice to see the trade work out for both sides.

Forgot about Muller being a coaching candidate. Well, there are plenty of bright hockey minds out there if we decide Arniel needs to go.
I’d be interested in giving Boudreau a serious look if Arniel does get the boot. I know people tend to think of him as a goof because of 24/7, but consider the man’s record. I think there’s a pretty good coach under all the jokes.

I completely agree. A lot of people make him out to be a good because of 24/7 like you said, but he has a very good track record and in caps tenure, his team went from having no people in building to sold out every night with a great atmosphere at the games. He obviously had talent that helped him, but he obviously know what he’s doing.
