Is it time to Trade Mason?

Hey Everyone, Let me start this out by saying that this is not pure knee jerk reaction to the last two games. A good number of those goals were not his fault, he was hung out to dry by the defense. That being said is it possible that now is the time to trade Mason? With the logjam down the middle and a Defense and Goalie that look to be paverage at best could it be to our benefit to put a package together for say someone like Yandle? Mason has tons of potential that is being wasted behind a terrible defense, and on top of that the jackets really aren't developing him (what a surprise). Maybe sending Mason packing for a true #1 defense man is a better move for the franchise moving forward, what do you think?

I guess my question is, if we traded him, who would you get to replace him?

Riding Sanford and York (or Dex and Sanford, once Dex is healthy) seems like a non-improvement.

If we were trading Mason, I would be looking for someone like Enroth, Bernier, Nabokov, or possibly Neuvirth, and I don’t see any of those teams letting that asset go for cheap.

or Rask or Schneider, which neither would be cheap. I think we could get Nabokov for cheapest since he has already had problems with Isles and they have Dipietro and Montoya with Poulin coming up. Maybe Nabokov for a pick and mason for a solid defensemen.
I dont think its time to trade Mason. i still think he can be a good goalie. We need to put a defense that can help him. There are only a hand full of goalies in the entire NHL that could have good numbers with our defense last year and even the year before. Our defense this year needs to step up defensively. If Mason can put together 5 good solid starts in a row, he will be dangerous for a long time. But we need to help him out.
I also dont want to trade him yet becuase i want to see what Dex can do. I think he could be a solid starter in the NHL soon

Let me get this straight, you think Mason has tons of talent and potential, but is being hurt by our defense. Your solution is to get rid of the guy with the talent and potential, rather than improve the defense?

yes

this is called the Dave Littlefield strategy to trading. Trade a young and promising player for a guy who is washed up and over-priced.

I think he was saying they should improve the defense.

I think the poster was saying that maybe it was a good idea to trade Mason for a defenseman. That way you would improve the defense in front of the goalie.

Maybe if Dekanich is ready to start in the NHL, the trade would improve the defense and CBJ would still have a goalie equal to Mason in terms of potential.

Dex is unproven, and Mason has been hung out to dry in a big way for easily 75% of the goals, if not more.. By removing Mason, they are far worse off than they are now.

Mase is going to look average until they stop with the brutal blown assignments and breakaways against. So will most goalies, frankly.

I want to see Dekanich in action. Supposedly he is NHL ready and if that is the case, maybe we can put something together for a trade if Dekanich looks promising.

Any contending team would have gotten rid of him a while back.

Mason will continue to look average (or below average) until he stops BEING average. C’mon, there are teams every bit as bad as the Jackets in the league (Minnesota, Toronto, and the Islanders, to name a few), but their goaltenders have the ability to steal games for them. Mason lost that ability at the end of the first season.

Yes, the defense is also to blame, I’m not denying that. But was the defense really THAT much better a couple years back when he won the Calder? Let’s face it, we’ve never had an all-star defense. I think maybe the pressure has just gotten to him, as now he knows he will have to carry the team to have any kind of success. Plus, you can tell when a goaltender is at least trying hard, and just getting burned by poor D…but you don’t put up numbers as bad as Mason has unless you are also part of the problem.

My point is, on any other team, Mason would be a back-up. Not starting his fifth game after winning none. It’s time to see Sanford at least get an attempt to step into the starting role, at least until Dekanich can get healthier. If I were the Jackets, I would have traded Mason a long time ago. There’s no doubt he can be a good goaltender…he’s already proven he can be. But thrusting him out there every week to let him lose can’t really be helping his confidence. And it shows.

Yes, our defense was much better than season. Hejda and Commodore were one of the best shut down defensive pairs in the league. That helps a lot.

Yes, he needs to go

I just read somewhere that Mase is 2-14-6 since Feb. 25, now if that isn’t a statement, I don’t know what is.

YES, the defense has made some bad plays and Mase can’t be held responsible for all of the goals.

But, this happens to all teams, and it’s in these situations that a great goalie steps up and steals the game.

Not buying anything Blue Jackets until they get their game together.

Your expectations are too high if your expecting a “great” goalie.
We said he needed to be good. Keep us in games and our offense would win it for us.Hes done that most nights.
Its really weird how people change what they want from a goalie because of our record.
