CBJ Roster Moves: Calvert Up, Savard and Mayorov Down
Blue Jackets' GM Scott Howson has just Tweeted that the club is making some roster moves in the wake of the club's ninth loss of the season last night:
We r sending Savard and Mayorov to Springfield and recalling Calvert.
Bonus points to Howson for being a conservationist with his characters.
Not sure why this move is being made, as while one could argue they want Matt Calvert for more offense, they never really gave Maksim Mayorov a chance to contribute. And, if Calvert is taking Mayorov's place on the third line, he also won't get to contribute much offensively.
The Savard move may mean that Radek Martinek is close, and possibly that Marc Methot is as well. John Moore has been OK but not great--much like Savard--so perhaps it's his turn to get some run.
The other move feels like shuffling deck chairs on the Titanic, personally.

The season of interesting decisions. Pretty sure Calvert doesnt have a point down there. Hopefully both Calvert and Mayorov refind their games
In Calvert’s defense, a major part of the reason he was sent down was that he was rehabbing from a groin problem. If his groin is healed, that may have been as much or more as a reason to bring him up than scoring (or lack thereof).

Its not that i have a problem with it. I like Calvert. I just find it interesting that he gets called up when he has 0 points in four games and is a minus four over someone like Byers. Not looking at stats, i would obviously rather have Calvert as he is familiar here, he just needs to find his game after the groin injury.
I’m disappointed we never got to see what Mayorov could really do. Being stuck with Pahlson and Dorsett makes it tough to contribute offensively.
I think thats more of the role they want him to play. I really dont like it though. We seem to do that with a lot of our players. Good teams like Detroit get guys like Helm, Filpulla, Abdelkater, Hudler, etc. that can do defensive stuff but still play with guys with skill to contribute offensively. We just turn them into pure defensive players and stick them with guys like Dorsett.
i’m surprised, mayorov looked pretty dangerous considering he was playing with such little skill and support around him. I wish we could trade pahlson, would anybody actually be interested in him or is he going to end up in the minors after his tenure with the CBJ?
I am a Matt Calvert fan and I hope he gets the ice time that was not afforded to Mayorov in the short time he was here. Assume this move was made to bring another offensive spark, which Calvert showed to be at the end of this year. Mayorov appears to have a good future though, and Savard did some good things, too. Assume they’ll be up again this year.
