Blue Jackets vs. Avalanche Scoring Chances 10/12/11

In addition to being the first shootout loss of the year, last night was also significant for being the first game (so far) where the Jackets were out-chanced. Even though shots on goal were even by the end despite the Jackets enjoying a major early advantage, a great deal of the shots on goal came from outside the circles or off the blue line - outside of what's considered the prime scoring chance area - while the Avs made the most of their opportunities, particularly down low.

Not surprisingly, the third period is what really killed the Jackets, surrendering 11 chances to the Avs (including the tying goal) to the Jackets single opportunity (which lead to the Martinek goal). Jeff Carter and Rick Nash generated quite a few chances for the Jackets, but they also gave up more than a few, mostly against the Landeskog / O'Reilly / Winnick line and the Shane O'Brien / Kyle Quincey defensive pair.

It appears that Scott Arniel was trying to match the Umberger / Vermette / Atkinson (or Brassard) unit against Colorado's 4th line of McLeod / McClement / Galliardi, but the strategy backfired badly as they were clearly out-chanced, including the opportunity that became Colorado's opening goal.
