Speculation: Trevor Daley?
After three posts this off season speculating on possible forwards (Spezza, Carter, and Weiss) that Scott Howson could trade for, it's high time we considered a defenseman - especially with the team's need for a puck mover and the log jam of "shutdown" guys on the blue line.
After all the talk about Kevin Bieksa, and the fact that he's likely to become the next big circus after Tomas Kaberle ended up staying put in Toronto, I started to wonder if perhaps Howson might look elsewhere. After all, some of his most impressive moves have come from a player with little to no buzz during the off season who suddenly became a Jacket. (Jan Hedja, Anton Stralman, etx.)
Keeping that in mind, Trevor Daley, currently with the Dallas Stars, is a startlingly good fit.
- Daley is 26. That puts him right in the age of "experienced young contributors" that Howson tends to look for in his trade deals.
- Daley (along with about half of Dallas' current NHL blue liners) is a UFA next year. With Dallas' ownership situation still in the air, Howson could offer the Stars some continuity without having to take on heavy salary.
- Daley's cap hit is only $2.3 million, compared to $3.75 for Bieksa. That's $1.4 million that could well go towards a potential Jake Voracek or Steve Mason extension.
- Daley is considered "somewhat undersized" (5'7", 207lb.), but an outstandingly mobile and durable puck mover who has been praised for his dedication and work ethic. Sounds quite a lot like Kris Russell - being able to use them to provide mobility on the top pairs while a Mike Commodore, Jan Hejda, or Rusty Klesla provided the hard hitting defensive hammer would be a thing of beauty.
- In his first 5 full NHL seasons he's never played less than 74 games. With the frequent injury issues on the Columbus blue line, having that kind of a steady presence could do wonders.
But, you may ask, how does Daley compare to the aforementioned Bieksa? Funny you should ask.

More games, equal production, better +/-, and less PIMs? Where, exactly, do I sign up?
The other obvious question is if Dallas would be willing to move Daley - unlike situations like some of the other players we've looked at this off season, there's no reason to think Daley wants out of town, and Dallas is well under the salary cap, so there's no big pressure there. On the other hand, Dallas is in the process of being sold, and rumors abound that once the deal is complete, they want to get Brad Richards inked to a new deal (not to mention a new deal for Jamie Benn, and still unresolved RFAs James Neal, Matt Niskanen, and Nicklas Grossman) - that means all that cap room could be going away very quickly once the new owner is in place.
If Scott Howson is serious about adding another puck mover, and he's willing to offer the Stars a package that meets their needs, I think he could do a lot worse than Trevor Daley.
But don't just take my word for it - what do you think?

Dallas’ obvious weaknesses, to me, are their blue line and the fact that they’re bottom six is mostly agitator guys, and not so much defensive players.
Possibly a package of Jan Hejda or Rusty Klesla, Andrew Murray, and a pick?

Methot + MurrDawg or Clarkie + 2nd rd pick.

Daley isn’t worth a 2nd round pick alone.
I have been complimented many times and they always embarrass me; I always feel that they have not said enough.

not to mention i cant see any reason why they would want to take on murry methot or clark ( and clarks 2 million cap hit which would negate any salary dumping) play station trades do not work in real life…
Dallas is well under the salary cap
They don’t need to dump salary. This would be like a normal trade between two teams to make themselves better.

and how is this a “playstation trade”? Murray and Clark are two solid defensive forwards, Clark especially. From what Matt pointed out, they would be a great fit in Dallas’ bottom 6.

because they are not going to trade a defensman when they needed defensive help. and as pointed out they are in the middle of selling the team. so just because they are under the cap doesnt mean they dont want to trim salary. and why would they take on clark? they are trying to get younger clark does not help them. ( they could have just resigned modano at half the price if they wanted a veteran.) so i see know reason for them to take on clark. i could potentially see them taking murry. but players like him are a dime a dozen.
Dallas has a fair bit of puck moving and a weakeness in shutdown D.
Columbus has an excess of shutdown players and a weakness in puck moving. I don’t see why this is such an unusual way to improve both teams.

have you seen cbus this year? im pretty sure shutdown defensman were a weakness for both teams…
but in all seriousness…
i was more concerned about the murry methot clark deal more than anything. it just doesnt make sense for dallas’ point. and as pointed out earlier a 2nd rnd pick would be too much for an average to slightly above average d man.
The pick is what makes the deal more plausible. If this happens, and Daley had a great season for us, and Methot was good for them, its a win-win.
I threw Methot in the deal to balance the defenseman for defenseman trade. Murray/Clark is an added bonus for their lineup.

Dallas is looking for defensive help so i highly doubt tehy would trade a defenseman. i would rather them take a look at MAB or Willie mitchell than try to make a package for an average to slightly above average Daley. or if a trade is a must look at calgary who is looking to dump salary any way robyn regher probably wouldnt be hard to trade for. or perhaps corey sarich.
no thanks to Bergeron.

the thing you didn’t look into in your analysis of the numbers is that Daley put up the same production in about 20 more games. Commodore can put up 20 points in 75 games, and play better defensively.
I’d be all for it if the price is right, but it better not include a high pick.

commodore will only play better on d if he quits taking half naked pictures of him making it rain and get on the treadmill. other than that i agree.
that picture was taken years before he signed with us, after he won the hurricanes super bowl pool I believe.
also, he wasn’t out of condition because he was lazy, he was out of condition because the program put together for him sucked. it involved a lot of stuff like MMA and yoga, and it just didn’t translate to hockey.

Sorry Matt, this idea just sounds too much like you thought it up in NHL10. Trevor Daley is a up and coming great two what defenseman, there is no way that Dallas is letting him go.
Although there is one thing that you didn’t mention that would make him fit in Columbus, he is a bona fide Red Wings killer…
No NHL 10 required, just a bit of daydreaming and looking at guys who might fit what Howson’s been looking for. Though, yes, that certainly is a point in his favor…
