Around SBN: Troubled Yankees Join Troubled Red Sox In Last Place

Per Tom Reed of the Dispatch, CBJ 4th-liner Mike Blunden has re-signed on a year, 2 way deal. The contract will pay him $590,000 in the NHL and $105,000 in the AHL.

Going by capgeek, this bring's the team to $59.9 million against the cap, but it's worth pointing out that doesn't include Filatov's $2.1 million potential cap hit.

I think this clears up a little bit of the mess on the 4th line. Two-way deal means its off to Springfield for you, Mikey. I know some people like him but I just don’t see him contributing more than other guys who can fill a roster spot.

I think he’s a good depth guy – not essential to the club, but a nice asset when the team needs to call someone up. But, yeah, I’m expecting him to start the year with the Falcons unless he really busts out in camp.

Honestly I thought you would have been one of the guys to say I was wrong…I know your tricks, Wagner.

No, no. :) I’m pretty much reasonable on this. But we have so many guys competing for a bottom 6 slot that it isn’t even funny.

Besides, if the choice is Blunden as a 4th liner, or Matt Calvert? I really want to see Calvert.

It probably is too early, but....

Here’s my guess, at least to start camp:

Nash – Vermette – Huselius
Filatov – Brassard – Voracek
Umberger – Pahlsson – Dorsett
Moreau – Clark – Calvert

Hejda – Tyutin
Commodore – Russell
Methot – Stralman
Moore (?)

Oh, hell. I forgot about Klesla.

Um, maybe the D looks like this:

Klesla – Tyutin
Commodore – Russell
Hejda – Stralman
Methot

Seriously, Howson and Arniel have their jobs cut out for them.

I like looking at the possible line-ups…think Boll will be our odd-man out, looking down from the press box?

I imagine he’s going to be a floater, yeah. I’m sure he’ll still dress for a decent chunk of games (especially if he works more on his non-fighting skills), but I wouldn’t be shocked to see him in the press box on a semi-regular basis.

I’d really like to see Boller in the lineup. Knowing we don’t have a true tough guy on the roster, I’d like to have two guys who are willing to drop the mitts and go at it. No better tandem on our roster than those two.

I like his passion and his energy, but I don’t know if he’s a guy we need every night. But, then again, that’s why we let them compete for it…

Blunden

I’ll be very happy if Blunden spends the season in Springfield, as I doubt he’s going to discover a whole new game. Good depth signing, but we need more from the grinders then Blunden’s likely to give.

Could this be too bold?

Nash – Vermette – Voracek
Huselius – Brassard – Filatov
Umberger – Pahlsson – Dorsett/Moreau
Dorsett/Moreau – Murray – Boll

Klesla – Tyutin
Commodore – Russell
Hejda – Stralman
Methot/Moore

It’s certainly possible, but I think it just highlights how many guys are going to be battling for spots in that bottom 6, and for the bottom defensive pairings.

Just for the record

This is the longest thread talking about Mike Blunden…ever…even if we switched topics 5 comments in.

because I think there is some intrigue…he’s a big body and with some development could be an asset for the Jackets.

I like Blunden. Maybe his fighting skills aren’t his forte (sometimes I wonder why Boll fights too), but this is a good signing. He’s a quality reserve forward.

The saga continues.
