Down Goes Salo, Bieksa Off The Table?

A Finnish newspaper is reporting that Canucks defenseman Sami Salo has injured his Achilles tendon playing floor hockey, and could be out for up to four months.

The Canucks are "looking into the report", and no has any thing official, though Nucks Misconduct does make a great point that Salo's just a little injury prone. If he is unable to go to start the season, it could mean that Kevin Bieksa, who the Jackets have looked into as a possible trade target, will be kept by the Canucks to make sure they can fill out their blue line.

While I hate to cast doubt on anything from the country that gave us tar flavored vodka and Salmiakki, this is still an unconfirmed report, (Whoops, never mind, it's confirmed now!), but you have to wonder if it will change some of the game plan for Scott Howson if Bieksa was his insurance policy against an unacceptable arbitration award for Anton Stralman.

I think it’ll do one of two things:

1. Increase the odds of them holding onto Bieksa indefinitely.

2. Up the asking price quite a bit.

I think if its option 1, they’ll be set in their ways and won’t negotiate with anyone unless its an earth shattering deal.

If its 2, it’ll be more than any of us will be willing to offer up (i.e. Filatov, picks, maybe stick them with Mayorov, but then watch him break out in a huge way [go figure])

I’d guess option 1 before option 2, but you may be right.

Either way, I think we’re out of the Bieksa sweepstakes.

Likely, yeah, but I can think of a few possibilities – perhaps offering Mark Methot in the package? But I’d guess that if Howson is going to make a move, he may look elsewhere.

So, Jason Botchford, one of the Canucks beat writers, actually thinks Bieksa is still likely to be moved.

Interesting, huh?

Wonder if Moore is brought along more quickly for that reason. Rushing him is probably a mistake, but it seems a more likely option of Stralman is let go as many expect.

I think Moore will make the team anyway – even with the apparent logjam on the blue line.

How fast is too fast? If he makes it at the start, was that too fast, even if the coaching staff deems him “ready?”

I think in columbus we all have nightmares of what happened to Klesla. If Moore is ready, by all means he should start with the big club this season.

I have been complimented many times and they always embarrass me; I always feel that they have not said enough.

Agreed. Klesla shouldn’t have been thrown to the wolves the way he was. He clearly wasn’t ready for what was asked of him.

im pretty sure Bieksa was off the table once Stralman was resigned.

This is an older post, done pre-Stralman blinking. At the time of the original writing, CBJ was certainly looking to get another defenseman.

Yeah this post is pretty irrelevant now.

Probably. But on the other hand, if Howson doesn’t like what he sees out of the current group (plus Moore & Savard) in training camp, I think he’s still likely to pick up the phone and give Mike Gillis a call, just to see where things lie.
