Around SBN: Kobe Bryant Isn't Up To Speed On Jeremy Lin, 'Linning'

Free Agency Open Thread

It's not expected to be a big day for the Jackets, with the acquisition of Ethan Moreau yesterday off waivers solidifying the team's checking line, but there are some RFA deals that could be announced today (Anton Stralman and Jared Boll both seem to be in progress), and who knows? Perhaps Howson will have a trade up his sleeve.

If anything happens, we'll get an update for you here and post our reactions, and feel free to leave comments with news, questions, or random abuse!

Bold (not real) Prediction: CBJ signs LeBron. Everyone is completely confused and in the resulting mayhem, the Cavs sign Kovy. Ohio keeps James, but nobody understand what happened.

At any rate, Happy Canada Day!

Going to be a quiet day on the Jackets front, for sure. Everyone, sit back, relax, and watch the chaos.

But really, anybody have a guess as to what will happen today? I have one semi-real prediction that is based on fake-science. I predict that Gonchar will sign with the Florida Panthers.

Now, this may or may not seem logical, but I play NHL 10 in be a GM mode. I’ve run through a few different franchises and nearly every time, the game makes Gonch go to the Panthers. It’s strange, and something very specific that happens each time. If it really happens, I propose creating a Twitter account for it and working to compete with Eklund. I think it would be more rational anyway.

It happens in free agency. The Pens don’t resign Gonch, and somehow Florida always gets him. Of course, they also don’t trade Horton away, so perhaps the accuracy will vary a bit.

by zekebud on Jul 1, 2010 11:29 AM EDT up reply actions

Interesting. Pittsburgh might not resign him so you’re half right so far…

Looks like he went to Ottawa – 3 years @ 5.5 million and a NTC according to TSN.

Which is why Pens didn’t sign him and why I’m glad CBJ didn’t. That is waaaaaaay too much for someone of his defensive skills (few and deteriorating) and age.

this happens to me as well. then they always try to trade him to me for Commodore and my best prospect.

Jody Shelley gets a 3 year deal in Philly. Seems like it’s going to be one hell of a day for ex-Jackets.

But honestly, do they need him in Philly? They’ve got enough goon-types as it is. Do they explicitly need an enforcer?

by zekebud on Jul 1, 2010 2:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Apparently they need him more than they think they need better goaltending…

well there seems to be talk that he will be sent to the minors and kept there. So who knows? I’m alittle disappointed in Homer.

#CBJ have not thrown any offers out on the market today yet. Not NHLers, anyway. Working on a couple of players for minor-league Springfield

Not shocking, but I think it’s the first I’ve heard CBJ mentioned in any free agency stuff today. Just thought I’d throw it out there.

Still Waiting

I would love to think that the 4th worst team in the league would try and do something to improve themselves. I don’t see Moreau pushing the Jackets up to the 8th seed in the west. Perhaps I’m missing something. I’m ok with optimism about the current lineup, but in reality I think they still more of a pretender than a contender.

by bolenbaugh on Jul 1, 2010 4:02 PM EDT reply actions

I have raised these same concerns, but I do sit on the more optimistic side of things.

Let’s ask – what changed between the playoff year and last year? A few role players, a goaltending fiasco (sorry Mase, but you were pretty bad) and injuries all over the defense.

What if CBJ were to have fewer defensive injuries (maybe Commie back to a legit shut-down player), see Mason playing at his end-of-last-year levels, and see the youth continue to get better (Jake and Brass looked much better at the end)? Plus, we can add a few of the prospects into the mix (Moore, maybe?) and cause competition for spots. I’d say a team with talent like that doesn’t necessarily need too much more.

But what is new for this year? Add a new coach who caters better to the young guys and (I believe) get something productive out of Filatov, and quite suddenly you’ve got a team that can at least be the 8 seed. CBJ had a really unfortunate year, and I don’t think the team was nearly as bad as seen by the record. Give them time, watch them grow and believe in Mr. Howson.

by zekebud on Jul 1, 2010 4:16 PM EDT up reply actions

I can see where you are coming from. I agree with you in getting more competition by mixing in the rookies. What is frustrating to me is that the competition on the blueline is to be the best 2nd line defensemen on the team, because all of them are 2nd line defensemen (in my eyes, sorry if its harsh). I guess that is where coaching in. I’m rooting for you Arni. As for forwards, I’d like to see something done. The FA centers we are looking for aren’t really there. I would love to see a trade, even if we have to over pay. I’d like to think that Filitov would take some of the scoring pressure off Nash, but I trust Filitov about as far as I can throw him. Isn’t there anyone out there on the market who can get the puck past a goalie without hitting glass? A competition for scoring would be refreshing in Columbus, too.

by bolenbaugh on Jul 1, 2010 4:47 PM EDT up reply actions

I think (and hope) that you are in for quite a surprise when it comes to just how much difference the coaching will make. Filatov, and to a lesser extend Brassard, are wild cards. Maybe Brassard finally takes the next step this season.

The blue line is an issue, but i think we can do it by committee, without necessarily having a star. I’m looking for a big jump from Russel and a small one from Strahlman (he’s only like 24 after all).

The big issue here is even if we could spend money there isn’t much there to spend it on, and free agency is a poor way to build a team anyway. Not a single cup team was built on free agents.

I hate the steelers the way a mother loves a child.

by notthatnoise on Jul 1, 2010 5:15 PM EDT up reply actions

I hope that I am surprised, too. This proposed deal with Vancouver might help.

by bolenbaugh on Jul 1, 2010 5:23 PM EDT up reply actions

FA Stuff

And for that matter, who is left out there that the team needs to fill in? A top center? A puck-moving defenseman? Nothing on the FA market really, or at least nothing that wouldn’t cost a great deal.

I know it’s disappointing to watch all these other teams do stuff, but CBJ are in a weird spot with a self-imposed budget. However, spending like crazy doesn’t mean big things. Let’s not forget what Philly and the Rangers are up to signing these enforcers for big numbers (Boogaard for $1.625 a year? Seriously?)

As per Moreau, he is not a pure positional fill, but with such a young team he can be a locker room presence and a good 3rd/4th line add. Check the Cannon’s story on that view. I think will ultimately help this year.

by zekebud on Jul 1, 2010 4:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Do we know what kind of number the self imposed budget sits at?

by bolenbaugh on Jul 1, 2010 4:51 PM EDT up reply actions

around 50 million, with flexibility to go a little higher.

Rumor is that with Hamhuis going to Vancouver. We are in the mix for Bieksa.

I’m a big fan of this potential move. I love Bieksa’s game

I’d love it more if we could ship Salary the other way.

NHLSourcesSay reports we have a trade agreed pending Hamhuis signing.

This could be Bieksa or Erhorf.

I’d consider trading Filatov + Salary for Erhorf to be honest.

Bieksa would be more likely one of our grunts and a 2nd.

maybe we’re shipping out Boll or Clark? That would explain the Moreau signing.

Probably Boller then. I think the checking line would be Moreau and Clark around Sammy

they may be older but I would like that Checking line, maybe put Dorsett and Calvert on the fourth line with Murray/MacKenzie/Blunden at center.

It would make sense if Boller was moved here. I also like that checking line, and if there was a depth chart for the 4th line C, you nailed it, IMO. Having Calvert on the 4th line would mean some scoring from the bottom line, and I would love that.

I’ll give Howson and open mouth kiss if he pulls this off:

1) Bieksa (3.75) for Clark (2.5) + 2nd Round Pick + Goloubef

2) Souray (4.5) for Commodore (3.8) + Boll

Nash – Brassard – Huselius
Filatov- Vermette – Voracek
Umberger- Pahlsson – Dorsett
Calvert – Murray – Moreau

Bieska – Souray
Hejda – Klesla
Tyutin – Methot

I think We would have to ship someone else from the starting blue line in addition to Commodore, or else you don’t really have room for everybody. For instance, there isn’t a single offensive Defenseman in your lineup. No Russel or Strahlman.

by notthatnoise on Jul 1, 2010 7:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Whoops

That’s my bad. Tyutin – Russell

Souray, Bieksa, and Russell would all be offensive defensemen .There would be no need for Stralman.
