Jackets offer Coaching Position to Guy Boucher

Aaron Portzline of the Dispatch is reporting in Puck Rakers this morning that the offer to become the next head coach of the Jackets was extended to coaching wunderkind Guy Boucher. Boucher will get back to the Jackets early next week with his decision on whether or not he will accept the job.

I have been a Dineen backer thus far, but I have to say I think I was backing Dino for the wrong reasons. I wanted him because I loved him as a player, whereas Boucher is the consumate coach. He is skyrocketing up the coaching ladder, having success at every level. I am really hoping for Boucher to accept the offer.

On top of his pedigree, there is one other very important factor to consider- Boucher was the head coach of the Drummondville Voltigeurs when Derick Brassard was lighting up the Q for them. Brass is such an important piece to the puzzle in Columbus, so here's hoping he can be reunited with his junior coach and they can work together to make Brass a star.

Remember, Boucher could pass on the offer. In fact, many think he will pass for one or two reasons, one being he wants to remain in the Canadiens organization, the other being he wants more experience in the AHL before making the jump to the NHL.

At any rate, if you are a Boucher-backer, cross your fingers!

It figures this happens while I’m at the Farmer’s Market. :)

I’m about 60/40 in thinking Boucher is the right guy, but I have to wonder if he’ll take it, or decide to stay with Hamilton and become heir apparent to Montreal. Still, at this point, I think I’d be very happy with him taking the job, and I have my bets on who will be called if he should say no.

I’m personally in favor of Dineen, but that’s because of my interaction with Sabres fans. He has done so much to make the youth of of their organization worthy of NHL time. He seems like a good fit for CBJ.

That said, if Boucher does decide to come, I’ll be happy anyway. He’s got a great resume so far, and I should believe that he’d help us out.

I’ve heard that the team has given Boucher until tomorrow to accept or reject the offer. If he accepts, great, we’ll have our coach and we can get to the draft. My fear is, he rejects the offer, and Howson starts to panic. I think he’d like to have a guy in place before the draft.

That being said, I’m afraid Howson may pull the trigger hastily on someone else. I certainly hope Howson is smarter than to make a snap decision than that. Here’s to getting a coach before the draft!

I disagree that Howson will panic – after all, we know that he was down to four guys, yes?

Boucher got the first offer. If he declines, whomever was #2 on the list will get the next offer. (My money is on Scott Arniel, at this point, but we’ll see.) I do agree he wants it done by the draft, though. It may not inform the choice much, but I think he’d still like to know who he will be building the team for.

As has been pointed out – don’t forget that Howson himself was the second choice for the Jackets after Bob Murray turned us down, and that hasn’t worked out so badly…

Right, Howson has been the best GM in team history (easily). I have faith that the best man will get the job.
