Free Agency Primer
With a little over two days until the start of free agency, it's time to shift gears from the future to the present, leaving the draft behind and hoping that perhaps we'll see a few more changes to help bring the team from "potential" to Playoffs.
Though it doesn't sound like Howson's going to be a huge gambler (Fourth line center? Really? That's the big goal?), we've been surprised before, and it never hurts to dream, right?
With that in mind, here's a quick link back to the Offseason Options posts we did - obviously some things are off the board now (though hat tip to Mike for correctly calling that the Rangers would trade Sanguinetti, even if we were wrong about where), but there's still a lot of good info and players that were interesting targets for a trade or a free agency deal in May are still quite interesting now.
In addition, keep an eye on From The Rink for their free agency previews, and Puck Daddy has started a series of "Top 10" players that you might want on your team...
As always, if the Jackets make a move, we'll try to get a reaction as quickly as possible, and don't forget to check back here on July 1st once free agency opens for the latest updates! We've also got a list of the team's UFAs and RFAs below the jump.

dont see cbus signing any FAs
it is slim pickings out there and columbus doesnt really need any more role players/4th line players the best forward so far is Lombardi and he is a second line center. so unless Cbus moves brassard or Vermette i don;t see that happening.really the only FAs that would be an upgrade are Volchenkov or Martin. but i doubt Cbus will wanna open their wallet for them. if anything happens it will be a trade but i just dont see to many changes to the roster this year
Yes and no
I don’t see us hunting any of the “name” FAs, but given all the grumblings about the blue line, I still suspect Howson will try to make some kind of move to add a bit more speed and puck-handling ability. If Dan Hamhuis goes to free agency, I wouldn’t be shocked at all to see Columbus in on the discussion with him.

I agree with what Matt said, plus I think Matthew Lombardi would rule. Maybe have him play on the 3rd, and drop Sammy down to the 4. Don’t care how crazy that sounds. We’d be set.
Columbus til I die, Columbus til I die. I know I am, I swear I am, Columbus til I die!

It’s crazy because Lombardi is going to get overpaid to high hell with Marleau and Plek off the market. I think he might make an interesting fit in there, but I don’t see us wanting to touch any part of that fight.

it sucks that you have to overpay based on this specific year’s market, doesn’t it?

Yep!
…for that matter, see “Commodore, Mike” for why we want to be very careful with paying a player a higher rate to make sure he gets here. I love Deuces, but if he doesn’t get back into form this year, we’re never going to hear the end about paying him $4 million a year. (Though I’ll also admit that’s STILL better than Adam Foote’s 6…!)

Yeah, Juice fits this category as well. At the time though, I feel like those were necessary signings, just to get this team back to respectable. I would argue this is the case particularly with Huselius because we had just gotten rid of Zherdev, and had no other skilled wingers.
