Cap spending for 2010-2011 Season
Why dont the Blue Jackets spend more money on players to reach the cap and compete better? It a very simple question.I am a die hard fan. We need to make it to the playoffs and win some games. It has been ten years. Its hard to compete against teams that are willing to spend to the cap.Why are we not doing the same so we can compete. The organization owes it to the players and the fans.We all want to win and have fun.

It’s a very simple answer – with the current losses due to the arena lease and operating Nationwide, they aren’t being given the money to spend right now. JPMac has said that he’ll open the wallet if Howson can make a good case for adding salary for a player, but because the team operates on an internal budget, it’s going to be against that budget, not blowing through to the cap.
That said, also think about some of the deals that get made by the cap teams…paying for guys like Chris Pronger or Marian Hossa isn’t so bad, but it’s kind of nice to NOT be burdened by contracts like Wayne Redden or Cristobal Huet, either.

This is completely correct, and is the real dilemma that the Jackets face. Without spending closer to the cap, the team gives up a shot at more high-profile players and sits at a real disadvantage. Fewer big players means fewer wins. But unless CBJ manages to start winning, ticket/merchandise sales won’t go up, and the budget won’t increase.
Hopefully the next two years can push the Jackets’ profile up a bit. If this happens, the team is likely to gain more income and will be able to start that push toward more salary. Obviously having cap problems is one thing, but I think I’d rather have a team with that kind of issue instead of wondering how to win when budget-limited.
Honestly, if the arena lease gets resolved soon (and there’s every reason to hope that it will), I suspect that will do as much, if not more, as selling out more games for the team’s budget. After all, that’s 11 million dollars a year that they suddenly don’t have to spend on the arena, and could potentially invest into players.

Even if they were told they could only use half of that, to help the budget…5 million dollars a year is a LOT of player right there.

exactly. as soon as the lease issue is taken care of, we become a cap team instead of a budget team.
