Are the Jackets working on a trade for Spezza? Update 10PM

Rumors have swirled that the Blue Jackets have traded for Jason Spezza at the cost of Derick Brassard, Kristian Huselius, and the 4th Overall Pick.

UPDATE 10PM

Darren Dreger is reporting via Twitter : "I just asked Bryan Murray if I can kill the "Spezza to Columbus rumour"...he replied, "yes, please do." End of story. For now."

While I believe there may be legs to this rumor, this may disintegrate. If for instance Ottawa tries to offload a contract like Jonathan Cheechoo, then thinks may fall apart.

The fun part, the rumor.

If I'm the Jackets I do this. If I'm the Senators (and Spezza quietly wants out / as opposed to Heatley who loudly wanted out)  I do this.

Financials

For the Jackets, Spezza will make 8 million dollars (4 of which he is due on July 1st). If we are going to make this trade, we will have to pay up.

Outgoing dollars of Brassard 2.8 and Huselius 4.75 total 7.55. That's pretty close. This passes the sniff test on our end.

Futures

The future is now for the Jackets. At 27, Spezza is the top line center the Jackets have never had and he'd likely stay that way for the next 6 seasons.

Huselius is ultimately a dollar sign that has to go the other way, so the future cost is Brassard and the 4th. Brassard's wildly inconsistent play, allows me to make this deal with little concern. The best case for Brassard is that he becomes Jason Spezza. With times and pounds added to his frame I can see him becoming a Danny Briere type of player, but can we wait til that happens? I don't think so.

The 4th overall, could be the solid blueliner that we have always wanted, but in reality it would take 3-4 more years before this player has a real impact on the team. It is essential that young players continue to churn through the system on entry year deals. Especially for a team on a budget, but every pick is a maybe. Focusing in and hitting a couple 2nd rounders needs to be focus if this deal is legit.

If landing a true #1 center in his primed, signed to a reasonable deal costs us the 4th overall draft pick, so be it. You do that deal.

Lines

Here's my top 6 folks

Nash - Spezza - Voracek

Umberger - Vermette - Filatov

Yikes.

I have heard rumblings of us being active on the trade front with Ottawa, Philadelphia, and Boston and I would expect that a deal is made. I would also expect Brassard to be on another team next year because he's one of our most tradeable, interesting assets. Either landing a top pair defender or a top line center. I'd be very surprised if he were on the team at the start of the year.

Yay nay on the Spezza?

no!

Yes with Brass and Huselius. No on the #4 pick. Both players are wildly inconsistent and will not help us enough this coming year. I hope this rumor is false for the sake of the #4 pick!

Huselius and the #4 pick are some sort of balancing act. We are sending back a lot of money in this deal. The #4 is likely the centerpiece from the Sens perspective. It would be integral to them rebuilding.

  1. Klesla and Zherdev were also #4 overall picks. If we lose a young defender, it would sting, but they wouldn’t help this team for years. This might also jumpstart another move for that top pair defender.

I like Brassard and I think that his hints of brilliance would be a fairly large price to give up here. But, that Spezza is signed to the ‘13/’14 season would be marvelous. Can you imagine him and Nash for that long? I might actually be quietly happy if this deal works out…

Personally I think if we could manage to get Marleau in free agency, that would be the ideal scenario – keep our pick and prospects while still getting a top center. Sadly that involves much more uncertainty. I suppose I am tentatively pro-SpezzaTrade right now.

The frontloaded deal on Spezza contract sure is sweet. Also getting away from the deal we gave Brassard without proving much, could be beneficial in the long run.

IF we do the deal, the 16th pick better be coming back with him…on the face of it, though, I wonder. It’d certainly be a bold move, but it feels like overpaying right now.

Darren Dreger (of TSN) says there is no deal.

Quote from Mr. Dreger’s Twitter feed (@DarrenDreger)

I just asked Bryan Murray if I can kill the “Spezza to Columbus rumour”…he replied, “yes, please do.” End of story. For now.

He’s one of the best rumor guys out there, so I’d trust him over the scuttlebutt for now.

I loved following his feed during the stuff leading up to the trade deadline. Really, if any of the TSN guys say it, it’s almost always right.

Dreger and Bob MacKenzie are two of the best in the business. One of the many reasons I’ve seriously debated acquiring a Canadian dish would be for TSN on deadline day and free agency.

Interesting

I would like that deal. It would sting to lose the 4th pick but I’m tired of waiting. We have a lot of young guys on the way who will help. And, we could always try to trade for Shea Weber. Wouldn’t that be sweet?

I’m about as interested in this than the Carter rumor…Ugh

I would be behind this, but I would almost prefer to send both the seconds rather than the #4. not sure Ottowa would take that though.

here’s why I don’t mind trading the pick: we already have a glut of defensemen in our system. sure only one or two of them have the kind of talent we’d be picking up at #4, but the depth is there. If Russel takes a step back or moore doesn’t pan out, we have other options. the same can not be said at the center position. after brassard, we have what? Cam Atkinson?

Yeah thats a good point. We’re pretty much stocked with d-men. Depth at center is a pretty legit concern. I still see us drafting a defenseman that can make an impact this year though.

I just wouldn’t want to count on drafting a guy that can come in right away.

way too much

unless they add the 16th pick that is WAY too much to give up. the guy doesnt play with heart (ever since he got his contract) take out the 4th pick and add the 34th and id say do it. but the 4th pick is to valuable in this deep of a draft. cam fowler is going to be a top puck moving dman.

I like how everyone is saying Gudbranson is going to jump Fowler and go to Florida. Thats fine with us because we’ve wanted him all along I think.

Cam Fowler is a forward playing defense. his coaches didn’t trust him enough to play on the PK in juniors. sure he’s got amazing offensive potential, but lets be careful before we annoint him a future star.

Jason Spezza on the other hand is a legit top ten center in the league who has put up a point per game in over 400 career games in the regular season and is also above a point per game in the playoffs. He’s also still 26.

by notthatnoise on Jun 23, 2010 10:15 AM EDT up reply actions

you think spezza plays defense? defense can be taught desire and passion cannot and spezza does not have the desire or passion. i would much rather have a top end prospect like fowler over a player who takes every other shift off cough cough Zerdev Cough yeah spezza has the talent but it doesnt help much if he doesnt use it..

by FFmorgan89 on Jun 23, 2010 2:29 PM EDT up reply actions

So what if he’s not using all of his talent? Then he’s crazy crazy talented to be putting up a point per game over his career. That’s more than Zherdev had.

Look, I realize the whole “passion” thing, but Spezza has been an excellent player for his whole career so far, even if he’s known as a neutral zone turnover machine. He’s a great offensive talent, and that would be the whole point of this. Nash has never had a top tier center to feed him, and this would make our top line instantly amazing.

Key word there is “instantly.” While defensive prospects are nice, they aren’t an immediate fix to any problem. They need to mature and that takes time. Not everybody can be Tyler Myers (Sabres).

by zekebud on Jun 24, 2010 3:06 PM EDT up reply actions

the point i am trying to make is you see spezza as the 90 pt scorer from before his big contract. he isn’t going to produce that anymore. is he more talented than zherdev? yes but that dosent change the fact that he won’t work hard until his next contract year. he may put up 70 pts but at that salary i would rather have vermettes 65 at a hit of 3 mill than spezzas 7 mill for 5-10 extra points.

by FFmorgan89 on Jun 24, 2010 4:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Cam Fowler plays defense, Jason Spezza plays center. And please, don’t even try to compare Zherdev to Spezza.
