Around SBN: Fighters React to Nick Diaz's Positive Drug Test

Ryan Kennedy over at The Hockey News argues the #1 priority for the CBJ this offseason should be a center for Rick Nash. I personally think tooling up the blue line is a higher priority, but what do you think?

He makes a good point, but blueline first, center 2nd.

Puck Daddy has an article up about the Flyers and what they’re going to do this summer…looks like Jeff Carter could be on the market. We talked about Spezza, but maybe we can look at Carter instead.

He’s been the topic of some discussions in the past. I wonder what our friends over at Broad Street Hockey think about a potential trade……..

I suspect Carter would fit very well with Nash. They’re both “drive to the net” players. Couldn’t hurt to ask…I think the problem is, who (besides Calvert) do we have that Philly would be looking to take back in a trade?

If they want goaltending, I don’t see Howson moving Mason. Would you take the risk of moving Garon, using Lalande as the backup, and giving Wesslau the #1 job in Springfield?

Calvert and Lalande…and a 2nd rounder? Both players have high upside, plus they just drool over Calvert…

I hate giving up Calvert, but I have to admit that’s a pretty decent package.

While I’m not exactly thrilled about giving Calvert away, I know the return would be more worth it than trying to get Spezza. The fact that Philly has been eyeing Calvert makes it easier for them to go for it.

That’s very true. I can see it.

Sorry I didn’t see this until now, but our members are split on trading Carter.

Like you said though, Mason would probably be asked for. If you’re right that Howson won’t trade him, I’d imagine Filatov becomes the centerpiece.

But if it was Carter/Boucher for Mason/Filatov/Calvert, does that solve your problem?

I don’t like the incoming assets more than what we’re giving up. Do not pass go, do not collect Steve Mason, Nikita Filatov and Matt Calvert.

I think getting a #1 center should be the highest priority. I would certainly love to see Carter here in Columbus.

Our problems last year centered around defense, something the team had been good at during the previous two seasons. Frankly that’s first for me, and an area of hope. I don’t believe in making blockbuster trades until you’re close to the cup

carter will not be in cbus. he doesnt fit. and philly would ask for to much. im looking over some of these deals that people have suggested and i am glad they are not the GM. either they are giving up to much, or they expect carter to come cheap either way some bad ideas…

Centers Matter

Out of curiosity, what value do you place in a top talent center? I think they are absolutely crucial and (sinful though it might be) I think having one would be more important than having Nash.

Let’s look at some of the top centers out there: Crosby, Malkin, Backstrom, Toews, Thornton, Eric Staal. They make everyone around them better. Particularly let’s talk about, Crosby, Malkin, Thornton and Eric Staal. Yes, Thornton had good linemates this year, but every other year they’ve been left with nobody important. Yet almost every time they’re putting up massive point totals, working with lesser players. They personally lead their teams to the playoffs. Even Backstrom has shown dominance without Ovie in the lineup.

A top center can solidify a top offensive line in ways that wingers (except Kovalchuk) just can’t do. While there may be questions as to what center we want, I don’t see how we can miss out on the dire need for a center.
