Riley Sheahan is a center who recently completed his freshman year at the University of Notre Dame. He's a playmaking pivot who can anchor a forward line due to his offensive and defensive ability. He was recently arrested along with fellow Irish teammate Nick Palmieri. This of course could be an isolated incident, but it makes one question his off-ice attitude and behavior. It's worth noting that this past season he was the youngest player in NCAA hockey.

2009/2010 Regular Season Stats:

GP G A PTS +/- PIM
37 6 11 17
N/A 22

Scouting Report (NHL.com):

"He's so mature for a kid his age -- I'm overwhelmed with that. He's equally good in all three zones and goes to the front of the net. He's very conscious in the defensive zone and down behind the net in the defensive corner -- he makes certain his team isn't outnumbered. In the neutral zone, he makes all kinds of things happen but will get back and turn a transition if needed."

Why he'd be a good fit in Columbus:

The Jackets have always had a lack of depth and skill at the center position, and Sheahan would go a long way in changing that. He wouldn't look out of place on a scoring line with a top winger like Rick Nash. He has the size to compliment Nash and the passing ability to feed him pucks on a consistent basis. A Hockey's Future article also has Notre Dame captain Ryan Thang comparing him to Nash.

Sheahan in Action:

I wasn't able to find any video of Sheahan, so you'll have to settle for a photo!

Arrest

There is one thing I admire about the Blue Jackets, and that’s our nearly spotless off-ice conduct. I have mixed feelings about drafting Riley because of his arrest.

Cleveland loyalists arise and keep the Jackets in Columbus!

This may have something to do with us not drafting him

I’ll pass on Sheahan. Isolated incident or not, I don’t want this kind of behaviour around my team. Regardless of the charge (in this case a public intoxication) its inexcusable, not to mention just stupid considering he’s in the position he’s in. You’re a Top 10 draft pick and you’re going to throw away the opportunity for a night on the town. Way to go, kid.

Columbus til I die, Columbus til I die. I know I am, I swear I am, Columbus til I die!
