Malkin to the CBJ?
I read this article over at TheHockeyNews.com and it talks about the Pens and their need to possibly dismiss Evgeni Malkin sooner rather then later. Here's the link: http://www.thehockeynews.com/articles/33579-THNcom-Playoff-Blog-Penguins-must-trade-Malkin.html
So in my usual fashion, let me pose the question on what you think about this situation and the situation as a whole for our boys in blue. The off-season has already started for us (unfortunately) so this isn't really a stretch to already begin the talks for what is possible next season. Jackets fans or hockey fans...what do you think? (coaching talks are def. welcome, just what do you think?)

It would probably take quite a bit on our part to grab Malkin from them, and honestly, I’m 100% NOT willing to give Pittsburgh anything that will make them better. It would be great having a talented player like Malkin join us but the price would be too much.

I don’t think Malkin is someone I want on CBJ either. The price is too much. Plus there are others, Sergei Gonchar, that I would love to see in Columbus rather than Malkin.

True, but I think Gonch’s price tag will be too high for anyone other than Pitt.
and regardless of Malkin’s play this year, they’d still ask for way too much. Since we’re talking trades, how about a guy like Jordan Staal? On second thought, they might value him more than Malkin right now…

I would love to grab Staal right now. he’s still only 21 and hasn’t reached his full potential yet.

NOT Gonchar
After living with a Pens fan for a year and actually watching the team, Gonchar is someone that absolutely nobody should be after. He’s miserable at defense, and fairly lazy in recent years. He can help quarterback a powerplay, but that’s about all he’s good for. I’d rather get a more complete D-man, even if less offense-minded, than Gonchar.
On the Malkin front, he’s one of the three best players in the NHL right now (potentially better than Crosby) who had a fairly “down” year (relative to previous production). I would absolutely love to see him in a Blue Jacket’s sweater.
However, he’s going to cost a bundle and they’ll want either good defense (to replace what Gonchar was supposed to be) or a good winger (to help Crosby). Based on our team last year, the defense isn’t all that interesting, and only good winger we had was Nash. I’m thinking we don’t want to lose him.
Agree on Gonchar
He’ll sign a big deal somewhere desperate based on his reputation from the old days.
I was hoping short term contract. I get the age factor but our d does need some help in the offensive department and special teams. Granted I’m not sure who else is available yet…

If we’re poaching from the Pens, I’d far rather see a deal that sees us pick up someone like Kris Letang.
didn’t they re-sign him this year for like 4 more years?

Letang is a great up-and-comer. With Gonchar’s eminent release, this just signals that they are going to keep all their young players and get rid of some of the aged veterans.
We shall see. I’m still looking forward to a great 10-11 season.

This site is a brilliant place to go when analyzing the salary cap. This link is a particular look at free agents.
