Game 79 Open Thread: Jackets vs. Capitals
Washington Capitals at Columbus Blue Jackets, Apr 3, 2010 7:00 PM EDT
Looks like Mase is a go tonight after all. Historically he's played well against the Caps, but he's in tough tonight. The Caps are dangerous on so many levels, and the defense is front of Mase may not be up to the task tonight. They are without Klesla, Hejda and now Russell.
As I've said before, I enjoy watching Eastern Conference teams. Washington is no exception. They have so many weapons, and who doesn't enjoy watching Ovechkin do his thing?

Wow, the big mystery. Looks like Garon is in net after all.
Weird game so far.

I think it’s just the trendy thing to do nowadays. Started in BUF, then PIT, PHI, NYR, …and so on.

I don’t boo Ovechkin. How can you? He’s way too entertaining.

Distinct Exception
Tonight’s game stands as something very surprising out of the Caps: a solid goaltending performance. For the entire season, the goalie has been mediocre at best, leaving me a bit frustrated by Theodore’s save percentage.
Based on the nature of playoffs (a dropoff in overall scoring for teams), I would not be surprised if the Caps lose fairly early in the playoffs. They’ll need to get much better performances out of either Theodore or Varlamov to move anywhere. This is why I’d be terrified to play against Detroit, Pittsburgh or Buffalo – all have excellent goalies or amazing playoff goalies.
Such is the nature of goaltending. You have better games, and worse games. In Theodore’s defense he hasn’t lost in regulation since early January, going something like 18-0-3 with 1 no-decision in his last 22 starts. And Varlamov, while taking some time to get into a rhythm, has been very good as well. I’m not really worried at all, since in games against better teams—San Jose, Detroit, Pittsburgh, etc—the goalies have played very well.
