The NHL Trade Deadline- From a Blue Jackets Perspective

There are still some deals trickling in, but the Jackets have made a handful of moves today, with the returns mostly looking toward the future. In all, the Jackets made five deals, here they are:

Raffi Torres to Buffalo for Nathan Paetsch and a Second Round Pick

We all knew this deal was going to happen, and Scott Howson got the asking price that he was reportedly looking for. Paetsch was thrown in to off-set salary. He's a depth player at best, and is a restricted free agent at year's end. I like this move for the simple fact we gain the pick. The second round hasn't been kind of Columbus since their inception, so here's hoping they will strike gold with this pick. It will be hard to see Raffi go, but hopefully he'll re-sign with the Jackets in the summer, as rare as that maneuver can be.

Milan Jurcina to Washington for a Sixth Round Pick

Milan, we hardly knew ye. A short time after acquiring Jurcina (along with Chris Clark) from the Caps for Jason Chimera, he's headed back to the Capitals for a sixth round pick. He was diagnosed with a sports hernia today, so that likely killed his value. Getting another for him should be looked at as a bonus.

Fredrik Modin to Los Angeles for a Conditional Pick

I have to be honest, I didn't think we'd be able to move him, even with all of the media speculation. For the Jackets to get any value whatsoever is a good thing. It's believed that the pick is a Seventh Rounder, my guess the conditional part is based on games played. It's too bad he couldn't be the dependable workhorse with the Jackets that he was with the Lightning, when he was in the lineup he was a beast along the boards. Good luck in the playoffs Freddy!

Mathieu Roy to Florida for Matt Rust

Rust is a scoring forward who is currently playing for the University of Michigan. Bringing in prospects is never a bad thing, but I personally really liked Roy's play. He didn't look out of place at all when called upon. Rust is just another player on the long list of prospects developing in college for the Jackets.

Alexandre Picard to Phoenix for Chad Kolarik

It's no shock to me that Picard is no longer a part of the organization. He was never able to break into the Columbus lineup and stick there. Kolarik is a depth forward who will replace Pic in Syracuse. Kolarik is an RFA after this season.

Overall it was a less-than-exciting trade deadline for the Jackets, the essentially just shipped out spare parts and got value where they could. The most intriguing pieces coming back are of course the second rounder and Rust.

What are your thoughts on the moves made by the Jackets today?

Raffi Torres is not Normally This Good

Let’s review the stats Torres has put up prior to this year (check www.hockeydb.com for the stats):

In 358 games played, he had 79 goals and 67 assists (146 total points) for .408 points per game or .221 goals per game.

This year, in 60 games, he has 19 goals and 12 assists (31 total points) for .517 points per game or .317 goals per game.

Relatively speaking, that’s a pretty decent up-tick compared to his past totals: nearly 1.5 times as much as his historic average in goal scoring. This is a contract year for Torres, and he’s normally not this kind of scorer. Torres is a 3rd liner in general, so his loss is not as good for this year, but he’s really not this good.

Who do we get in return? A decent young D-man and a 2nd round pick. I’ll take it for an over-performer who is really a 3rd liner, even in Columbus.

Bonus

We may be able to resign Torres in free agency, meaning we got a D-man and a 2nd round pick for (likely) just a bit of extra salary in Torres.

A 2nd round pick for nearly nothing? I like it.

thank you. don’t get me wrong, I like raffi, but people are going nuts over this like we just traded an important part of the organization. we traded a third line winger having a career year.

maybe he was happy playing in Columbus…players usually play better in a situation that they find to their liking…so if he was happy and could put up solid numbers each year…you wouldn’t of tried to keep him? Considering he does most of our scoring too….

Torres was 6th on the team in scoring, only 2 points ahead of Strahlman.

yes i would have tried to keep him, and howson did offer him a contract extension if i remember correctly. he just wanted too much for a third line winger.

Torres is a gritty player. He was one of my favorite players, However, you cannot pay him like a top 6 forward.

exactly. I loved his game as much as anyone, but he was not a top 6 forward.

Torres is 6th in the league in shooting percentage this season and way above his career norm. He shouldn’t have as many goals as he does.

Thanks for Modin! Sorry he didn’t really work out for you guys.

if he can stay healthy he’s still a contributer. thats a big “if” though. good luck.

My opinion of today

I liked the Roy and Picard trades. They just don’t have a spot in the near future. The Torres trade was……iffy at best. I like the 2nd rounder. Not the dman we got. Just a salary dump. Jurcina back to Washington is good for him. He didn’t have a spot either. Modin for a seventh rounder? sure, why not. Just a non impressive day for the Blue Jackets. Stop me if you have heard this before….it’s a great set up for next season!

Free Milan, literally. With the Caps depth at D coupled with his hernia, I’d be shocked if he meets the games minimum to secure the Jackets that pick =x

I should have saved my old signature. Oh well!

by Whiter Mage on Mar 3, 2010 8:45 PM EST up reply actions

well he wassn’t going to play for the jackets either, so at least this way there’s a chance we get something out of him.

I want to see who the draft pciks are before I call this successfull or not

You are probably right on Torres playing above his potential, but this was a sellers deadline and they got practically nothing for him. Modin either, Jurcina’s stock was never higher, and NOTHING for either of them. 6th or 7th rounders count as nothing. For every Henrik Zetterberg there are literally thousands of never-made-its. Granted, Jurcina was injured and that hurt his value, but whether it’s bad luck or not, it still reflects badly on Howson.

Dont even get me started on the mismanagement of Filatov. He probably won’t come back, even if he did, his development is forever stunted.

by miah on Mar 3, 2010 7:51 PM EST reply actions

I could not disagree with this more. a second round pick is very valuable, and you calling it “practically nothing” shows a lack of understanding for how hockey teams are built. teams don’t give up second rounders easily. Could we have gotten more for raffi before the break? maybe, but it wouldn’t have been noticeable in the long term. We should be throwing a party because somebody gave us ANYTHING for Modin. Jurcina’s stock was a hell of a lot higher before he got diagnosed with that hernia.

explain to me how bad luck reflects on scott howson. how is it his fault Jurcina got injured at the olympics?

6th and 7th rounders count for more than nothing. they are worth about as much as Modin and Jurcina, neither of whom would be wearing union blue next year.

I think you have a VERY inflated view of how much these players were worth. ask around on other SBN sites and see what they think.

I would be amazed if filatov wasn’t back next year now that hitch is gone, and i would hardly call playing in the second best league in the world stunting his development forever. worst case scenario, he’s a year behind.

2004 NHL Draft...

Columbus picks Alex Picard w/ the 8th overall pick. On the board: Jeff Shultz, Mike Green, Travis Zajac, Wojtek Wolski, Brandon Dubinsky, David Krejci, etc.

Granted, hindsight is 20/20, but it speaks to the complete ineptitude of Jackets management…that I had hoped was gone forever when Howson/Hitch took over. What a catastrophe. Year after year drafts go by and we are sold on the future, the future, the future.

Mark my words, this organization will deal away/lose players like Brassard, Voracek, Mason, etc. and still be clinging to the “future”.

by miah on Mar 3, 2010 8:02 PM EST reply actions

We will not deal those players, because they have already arrived and are already NHL players. All of the guys we traded before were obviously never going to amount to much.

You’re just being negative because you’re bitter about losing for so many years, which is understandable, but you aren’t being objective at all.

Fun Story

In 2004, the GM of Columbus was Doug MacLean.

In 2010, the GM of Columbus IS Scott Howson.

I think there’s a difference here – Howson was not involved in picking Picard.

I realize that we may not be performing so wonderfully at the moment, but to pin the blame of past blunders on the current management is foolhardy. 1st round draft picks under Howson are Jakub Voracek and Nikita Filatov. One of these is turning out well thus far, and the other is widely considered to be the best prospect in hockey.

I’m pretty okay with how Howson and company are running things at the moment. We’ve made the playoffs under this GM, and this year can easily be forgotten with a return next season.

Trades

My biggest problem with todays news was that playoffs last year bad year this year everything gets bombed and we start over with youth. I feel sorry for Nash they let veterans go after last year and never replaced that leadership Where is that going to come from now? This sets us back 2 years minimum

by Hawls on Mar 3, 2010 9:45 PM EST reply actions

explain to me how everything was bombed. not a single important player was traded away. this doesn’t set us back at all.

Everyone seems to be forgetting that we have free agency coming up. It’s not like we’re going straight into training camp next month, guys.

Don’t forget that in addition to the draft picks and prospects, Howson opened up something like 7-8 million dollars of cap space for next year. Don’t be shocked to see him use it…

by Matt Wagner on Mar 4, 2010 6:58 AM EST reply actions

any big centers or d-men who are going to be free agents?

I hate the steelers the way a mother loves a child.

by notthatnoise on Mar 4, 2010 9:08 AM EST up reply actions

There aren’t a ton of big names this summer, but there are a few very good players who if not re-signed will be available on July 1. Patrick Marleau is the biggest name, and I think his return to San Jose will depend on how they do in the playoffs. If they bomb again, I can see him moving on. I doubt Columbus could afford him though. I’d like to get Tomas Plekanec myself, but it would seem that the team is going with Vermette, Brass and Pahlsson as the top three centres. (not that I mind that).

As for blueliners, Sergei Gonchar is a free agent, but I highly doubt he’s within our budget. I wouldn’t mind signing Joe Corvo or Dan Hamhuis. Heck, even both if the budget will allow for it.

I wouldn’t want Gonchar because of his age. He’s starting to get old and injuries are taking over. Beyond that, he wants to stay in Pittsburg and end his career there…if the price is right.

Corvo and Hamhuis would be nice pickups, and while you’re right he’s probably out of our budget, I’ll continue to dream of Marleau.

I hate the steelers the way a mother loves a child.

by notthatnoise on Mar 4, 2010 11:57 AM EST up reply actions

Marleau's play this season...

has priced him out of many teams stratospheres. Our shot at him was last season when he was being dogged by everyone and their brother b/c of his uninspired play and their tanking in the playoffs. He’s gonna stay a Shark.

Anyone the jackets get they will have to overpay ala Commodore.

by miah on Mar 4, 2010 2:20 PM EST up reply actions

I don’t know that we necessarily have to overpay for someone like that anymore. We’re a young team thats on the rise, and we could be very attractive to someone in a situation similar to Vermette, where he was behind a lot of talent in Ottawa and wasn’t getting a ton of ice time.

Would we have to overpay for someone of Marleau’s caliber? probably. but i think we’re past overpaying for normal everyday starters.

I hate the steelers the way a mother loves a child.

by notthatnoise on Mar 4, 2010 3:40 PM EST up reply actions

Was not Hamhuis available??? I think we should of made a move for him now since I don’t think it will be as easy when the season will be over…many teams are coveting Hamhuis so Jackets are only going to find it harder to sign in the offseason…Prove me wrong boys, prove me wrong/..
