Modin traded to Kings, May not have made deadline however

TSN reported that Freddy Modin was traded to the Kings, but there is some doubt as to whether the trade call was made before the deadline passed.

More to come.

EDIT: The trade went through, Tom Reed reporting the return to be a conditional seventh.

Later this evening i will have a full trade deadline recap.

bad bad bad bad

Torres, Jurcina, Modin for a 2nd, 6th, 7th and some crap dman. AKA, A good minor leaguer, a future minor leaguer, and two wash outs. Excellent day for the Jackets. I can’t believe I have season tickets.

why don’t you have any confidence in the jackets draft?

easy

name some players in the Syracuse who have a real chance of playing for the jackets in the near future. Jon Moore being the only other prospect I can think of and he isn’t even playing for Syracuse. I am excited for the 2nd rounder, don’t get me wrong. Jackets have also traded Picard and Roy. Not sure how I like this day.

guys who can be reasonably expected to play in columbus at some point:
Matthew Calvert
Cody Goloubef
Nikita Filatov
Maxim Mayorov
John Moore
Johnathon Sigalet
Grant Clitsome
David Savard
Cam Atkinson

you have to look past syracuse. we have people playing in other places too you know. This list also doesn’t include guys from recent drafts who have already made the jump. these are guys who have debuted in the NHL in the last year or two:
Derek Brassard- #1 center talent
Steve Mason- future Vezina candidate
Derek Dorsette- excellent role player
Jake Voracek- top line talent at wing
Kris Russel- good offensive D-man

I hate the steelers the way a mother loves a child.

also i’ve noticed i forgot a few people with a chance to make the jump eventually, like Nick Holden or Will Weber

I should also add that Clitsome has already made his debut on emergency call up, and he looked like one of our better defensemen last night.

The point I should make about this is that, sure, not all of these guys are gonna be stars, but I’ll bet you right now at least two of them will be. and you don’t need a team of stars to win, you only need a few. so even if only a couple prospects turn into stars and a couple of the guys already in the NHL play up to potential, we’re in great shape to contend for years.

notthatnoise is right

We are currently set for next year and the year after. We’ll need to resign Voracek at some point next year, but besides that our current core isn’t going anywhere. I like that.

by zekebud on Mar 3, 2010 4:08 PM EST up reply actions

really?

Dude, on some of those guys, are you joking? Yes- Filatov, Mayorov, Moore, Clitsome, Sigalet. The rest are a complete long shot. Spot duty players at best. I completely agree on the current jackets. you are correct in saying they are good picks. But I can’t agree with a few you put on there.

by Ryan31 on Mar 3, 2010 4:14 PM EST up reply actions

Those guys all have a legitimate shot at making the NHL. Maybe they don’t stick, and end up as depth players down in the AHL. Maybe some of them have an unexpected halt in development, but as of right now they all have a chance to be contributers at the NHL level.

Let's Review

Please people, look at this handy chart before complaining:
http://www.hockeybuzz.com/cap-central/team.php?team=CLB

The three NHL players we dealt were UFAs. We were not getting them back, and to simply let them walk is foolish. We got SOMETHING for them, which is ultimately much better than nothing. Picard was a RFA, but is seemingly pointless here.

Look, we are in no position to make a playoff run, and leaving ourselves to rebuild our system and leave cap room for our current players.

For that matter, we’ve got a “new” player in Filatov, John Moore, and a few good-performing college players (Atkinson and now Rust) lined up. Also looking at the Hockey Buzz list, we’ve got LOADS of young talent, and with another year of experience, we are bound to get better.

We lost one player of real significance (Torres), and we could get him again in Free Agency. I’d consider this a good outcome for our team.

valid points

you made some good points in your post. But getting a 6th rounder and a 7th rounder today and hoping for the best isn’t my idea of a good day. Sure, I could be wrong, and I hope I am, but I can’t agree with just getting very late draft picks. But that’s just me.

so you would rather we get nothing?

look, Jurcina and Modin are easily replaceable at a much lower price. I don’t see how losing either one of them can matter to you. do you really think they could be a part of the team’s long term future?

by notthatnoise on Mar 3, 2010 4:44 PM EST up reply actions

to put it in perspective, Jurcina makes twice as much as Strahlman. is it really worth it to be paying that much money to a guy who would ideally be a 3rd pairing defenseman at best?

Kolarik is a good pickup

Let’s compare the change of Picard to Kolarik:

Picard, from 05/06 up to 08/09 in the AHL has 30, 39, 20, and 32 points in about 45-50 games per season. His NHL numbers are not even worth remembering, with 2 assists in 67 games with the Jackets.

Kolarik has less experience (has not yet played in the NHL), but had 50 in the 08/09 season (76 games) and currently has 35 points in this season (59 games). Particularly, Kolarik’s college was huge, especially compared to the Major Junior work from Picard.

So at the very least, we now have a better, younger (by one year) forward who has shown a good deal of potential. Considering Picard with picked 8th overall by Columbus in 2004, his production was disappointing, and we’ve managed to upgrade. Kolarik may not be this superplayer, but I can see him as a good 3rd line player in a year or two.

Torres is Not Normally This Good

Let’s review the stats Torres has put up prior to this year (check www.hockeydb.com for the stats):

In 358 games played, he had 79 goals and 67 assists (146 total points) for .408 points per game or .221 goals per game.

This year, in 60 games, he has 19 goals and 12 assists (31 total points) for .517 points per game or .317 goals per game.

Relatively speaking, that’s a pretty decent up-tick compared to his past totals: nearly 1.5 times as much as his historic average in goal scoring. This is a contract year for Torres, and he’s normally not this kind of scorer. Torres is a 3rd liner in general, so his loss is not as good for this year, but he’s really not this good.

Who do we get in return? A decent young D-man and a 2nd round pick. I’ll take it for an over-performer who is really a 3rd liner, even in Columbus.
