Jackets trade Raffi Torres to Buffalo

Watching Rogers Sportsnet right now- reporting Torres to Buffalo.

More to come.

EDIT: Tom Reed reporting the return is a second rounder and Nathan Paetsch. Paetsch was put on waivers earlier this year by Buffalo but went unclaimed. This is strictly a salary dump. The second rounder is the key piece coming back.

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, dammit howson…stop sitting on your hands and trying to give yourself a “stranger” and make some moves that will help with club….

Torres gone….sigh….for a guy that isn’t going to help us and a pick that will go either to trade for a 40-something washed up player or a young guy that needs 5 years in the minors an when he is ready they will trade him……damn you Columbus…make a move.

I agree 110%. I swear there better be something Howson sees in this guy that we don’t. Whatever shot we may have had to sneak into the playoffs is on a one way trip to Buffalo.

How versatile we talking here? If he doesn’t start by scoring goals and stopping opponents from scoring there’s going to be hell to pay in Columbus.

Congrats to you guys though. Treat him well.

He can play both offense and defense and was caught by a logjam of defenders. Plays well and could very well use a change of scenary.

Don’t forget guys, Paetsch is just a salary dump. We knew we would be getting a pick for Raffi. Paetsch was thrown in only to balance the salaries.

but....

what have we done with these picks…we are finally getting a few guys out of Syracuse to play but no one that is going to help us win….I’m tired of draft picks and young guys that are too unreliable…make a move for a guy with actual talent to bring in instead of more of these… ???? (question marks)

no offense to anyone…but we got a taste of playoffs last year cuz we did OVER-ACHIEVE but it made a big stride in our organization…this move will only put us back to where we were before making playoffs…that is my problem, we are de-evolving here..

this move is not putting us back. the play of the team this year is what has put us back. this trade is for the future, because its obvious that this year is done.

we’re a small market team, get over it. we have to build through young players and the draft. you are also making the mistake of assuming that this GM is as bad at dafting as our previous GMs. I think we can say that’s not true.

We aren’t a team thats one piece away from a championship. we’re an extremely young team that needs time to mature, and there are going to be growing pains along the way.

Toronto was able to get a solid prospect out of Pittsburgh for Ponikarovsky. I think Torres is a better player. Both were UFA’s. Jackets got hosed in all three deals, I think.

its not that he’s coasting or anything, he’s just extremely out of shape due to making a poor choice about what to do this summer. with the proper off-season program, he should be right back to the shutdown guy he was last year.

on another note i think its ridiculous to say a pro athlete is ever being lazy. they know better than anyone that if they don’t perform they are out of a job or have to sign for much less money. it just doesn’t make sense for an athlete to be lazy.

we sound like Pittsburgh Pirates fans after some of the trades they have made(me included) about how we’re done with the team and then two weeks later we are back to rooting for the team. Who knows this team could turn it around and make a run to the playoffs, but somehow I doubt that. It looks like we are loading up for a run for the cup in a few years as apposed to this year

Let's Review

Please people, look at this handy chart before complaining:
http://www.hockeybuzz.com/cap-central/team.php?team=CLB

The three NHL players we dealt were UFAs. We were not getting them back, and to simply let them walk is foolish. We got SOMETHING for them, which is ultimately much better than nothing. Picard was a RFA, but is seemingly pointless here.

Look, we are in no position to make a playoff run, and leaving ourselves to rebuild our system and leave cap room for our current players.

For that matter, we’ve got a "new" player in Filatov, John Moore, and a few good-performing college players (Atkinson and now Rust) lined up. Also looking at the Hockey Buzz list, we’ve got LOADS of young talent, and with another year of experience, we are bound to get better.

We lost one player of real significance (Torres), and we could get him again in Free Agency. I’d consider this a good outcome for our team.

by zekebud on Mar 3, 2010 4:12 PM EST reply actions

And my friends from Buffalo claim “Buffalo will treat him well.” If that’s any consolation to you.

Well here's my long rant to what I missed.

a. Season isn’t over til it’s over…probably won’t but you should still put your best foot forward and just try your hardest (other factors play into it other then us just winning…other teams could lose at the right times or someone gets hurt and a team has problems that weren’t there before, i.e Gonchar-less Penguins.)

Torres might have asked for more then what he was really worth, I don’t know, neither do you. I think when players admit they would like to stay and are happy with a club, especially since Torres has done nothing but prove he deserves a deal (another thing, we have plenty of cap space to sign Torres)….Ok, I’ll give up Manny cuz he was asking WAY more than he was worth but Torres I think we could have nabbed him at a decent price for a few more seasons. Jason Chimera, I still miss you. :(

c. Just because you have someone who is highly touted as a rookie, doesn’t mean he is going to just bloom like a Sidney Crosby. So pretty much when you trade for youth, essentially you are playing roulette with your future. It’s true, don’t deny it. Sometimes youth don’t pan out and then a club loses out….

d. Ok we have some picks…I’m not completely sour on these deals, I just wish we could have done more. So we are setting up for next season, I’m fine with that, I wasn’t expecting the Cup this year so I’m not that disappointed. I just hope that we REALLY ARE gearing up for next season…you can’t make playoffs then fall off the map, look at the Thrashers organization (they recovered poorly just to rebuild again.) Let’s just hope that Howson is really trying to make some moves in this upcoming season…not just saying he will.

We have been playing it too safe I think, slow and steady might win the race but if the Jackets fail to get a few good winning seasons…probably won’t be in Columbus for us to worry about.

e. Ok, sure 1st line Centers are in short supply and high demand, but the point of me saying that was…How long have we known what are problems have been and not gone out and made a real push to fix that? We have passed over a few names in the last couple seasons that I think could of really helped us out…I think being a young team that is still proving itself does have some trouble luring people like Lecavalier or maybe Kaberle away from their present clubs but if you are willing to pay someone like Commodore all that money to play, then it should be a no-brainer to add someone of their caliber.

I hope Nikita Filatov comes back next season…actually if he was still on the squad now I might not have such a big deal with people like Torres leaving because the offensively ability of that kid….we need scoring in Columbus and that kid’s got it.

a. This season is over. we would have to win almost all of our games to make the playoffs.
b. I’m normally not a fan of all caps but i feel like i’m having trouble getting this point accross: WE ARE NOT A CAP TEAM, WE ARE ON A BUDGET. Jason Chimera and Raffi Torres are both easily replaceable. neither one of them is a special player. I understand they were fan favorites, but so was OKT.
c. I’m not denying trading for youth is taking a chance, but its a much better risk than hoping 1. we are able to resign Torres and then 2. he has another season as good as this one.
d.seriously? you are seriously questioning whether howson is trying to do whats best for the franchise?
e. first line centers require we either hand out a $7.5 contract to someone in free agency or trade away 2-3 blue chip prospects and a couple draft picks. we can’t afford to do either of those things. we have to hope we can draft one or trade for a young player that developes.
scoring is not our problem. even with Hitch as our coach we were middle of the pack in terms of goals scored.

I hate the steelers the way a mother loves a child.

by notthatnoise on Mar 3, 2010 6:25 PM EST up reply actions

Sorry

a. Great optimism but you really do lose when you give up already. Not saying you aren’t probably right but if their is a chance to get in, any club should fight for it.

Exactly more of a reason to stop playing it safe, Columbus is endanger anyways of going bankrupt and being relocated, and if you trade away every player older then 18 you should have tons of money considering they are getting paid milk money, not 6-7 million dollars. Take a chance is all I am saying….

c. Same thing, hoping one works out…you choose prospects, i choose vets. Don’t say Torres or Chimera are easily replaceable because I don’t see anyone taking their place…who Dorsett? ha, great goal scoring there, Boll? D-minded Pahlsson? Oh no I got it, snake-bitten Huse who seems to miss almost very chance he gets……you get rid of all our guys that score and put all the pressure on Nash, Umby, and Vermette…

oh, and another reason we don’t score is because we rely on young prospects like Brass and Voracek, who are talented but not ready for the workload in front of them…Only player that has that type of ability I’ve seen is Filatov and he is in Russia because of Jabba the Hitch.

d. Howson tries but I think Howson talks to create buzz sometimes and nothing more. He wants to make waves but continually makes ripples. I think Howson wants better because it is more lucrative to win but he needs to roll that dice at some point and spend the dough so Columbus can get there.

e. yeah so by your standards you want to wait another 6 seasons for us to be competitive…I’m all for youth, but we are already the youngest team in the NHL and I think you can’t be too loaded with youth…need to find a balance and Columbus has either really young or really old players, then Rick Nash.

Scoring is a problem, this is a streaky scoring team. Every player is steaky and if our defense don’t hold we usually don’t win. Simply because we don’t score or not nearly enough to put a team away.

Skip the Pitt, Move on down to Broad Street....
Philadelphia Flyers / Columbus Blue Jackets, 'nuff said.

by PhillyPhan85 on Mar 3, 2010 8:54 PM EST up reply actions

a. like i said, this season is done, get over it. yes the players will continue to fight, their jobs are on the line and i’d be willing to bet most of them will compete just because they don’t know how to stop.
b.They don’t have tons of money because THEY ARE ON A BUDGET. thats what these trades were about (particularly Modin), clearing money. now we’ll be able to go make a splash in free agency or resign some of our young guys who’s contracts expire in the next year or two.
c. I’m not saying they were replaceable with someone currently on the team. Its really easy to go out and sign a 3rd line winger on the cheap. We also did not depend on raffi very much for offense. he was 6th on the team in scoring, only 2 points ahead of Strahlman. Maybe you didn’t know this, but Huselius had about 15-20 more points than torres and actually has more points than both Vermette and Umberger, who you said would be the ones depended on for scoring. do a little fact check please before you go spouting nonsense.

Brass and Voracek won’t be ready for the workload in front of them until you let them try to do it. Thats why Hitch is gone, because he wasn’t letting talent develop. You’re kidding yourself if you think Filatov is further along than those two.
d. Howsom is the complete polar opposite of someone who talks to create buzz. again, he can’t “spend the dough” because WE ARE A BUDGET TEAM.
e.it doesn’t take six seasons. Brassard could step up and be that number one guy next year without Hitch around. We’ve got a loaded farm system and could make a trade for another teams budding center. We simply can’t afford another $7-8 million contract.

Scoring is not the problem, its where the scoring comes from that’s the problem. we don’t have an established offensive D-man. All that needs to happen for us to compete again next year is for a few of our young guys to play up to potential, not even all of them.

I can understand being frustrated, but you aren’t being logical or rational.

I hate the steelers the way a mother loves a child.

by notthatnoise on Mar 4, 2010 9:24 AM EST up reply actions

Please slowly re-read what notthatnoise is saying. He’s 100% right in every argument.

While we are statistically not “out of it,” the kind of winning streak we’d need is unthinkable at this point. This does not mean I’m a sad, lowly anti-fan. I am not pleased where this season ended up, but it’s not suddenly turning around.

I realize you’re disgusted because of the whole “next year” thing again. But at no point in the Jackets franchise has “next year” meant the return of super top talent that has better NHL experience (Brass, Voracek). This gets better because they might get some play time through the end of the season because of Hitch being gone. Now we can actually lean on those young players.

Furthermore, our goaltending can leave that loathed sophomore year and perhaps work unhindered. This all gets added to the fact that we’ve got Filatov (the top prospect in the entire league) and that Hitch isn’t here, and I like what I see.

And let’s remember here: none of the people we traded are essential to the team. While fans may like them, they aren’t the core of scoring, and they can be replaced.

I realize the inherent risk of getting future picks instead of current players. But really: do you want Torres to walk for nothing, or do you want a 2nd rounder in return? I’d go with the pick option, as there is no telling whether we would get him back (and Howson did make an effort to resign him).

Give Howson a chance to show what he’s doing – he has never worked with this organization under his choice of coach. With Hitch out of the way and Howson able to get a leader on the same wavelength, I like our chances.

The biggest thing for me is, I feel like every season we’ve just been setting up for the next year. Its take to turn the corner and set up for the next 4-5-6 years. The lack of a big deal was discouraging.

this is backwards. this deal was for the long term future, not next year. if we were gearing up for next year we would have paid raffi.

I hate the steelers the way a mother loves a child.

I just don’t like seeing us stock pile picks all the time. Its great having young talented players but it seems like they’re never ready for the big time. I guess we’ll have to wait and see how next year goes.

that it seems like they’re never ready for the big time says more about the drafting ineptitude of our previous GMs than it does about the strategy. The way we’re building our franchise is identical to how the Penguins, Blackhawks, and pretty much every successful team since the lockout has done it.
