Shrapnel - 2/1 Edition

In this edition of Shrapnel: The latest from Dispatch artist Mookie, looking ahead to next season, a look at Garon's impact, injuries, trades, and more!

And away we go!

Star-divide

Puck-rakers:

It was a rare Sunday in the NHL. Trades, rumors, and some Jackets news as well.

Another drawing from Mookie.

Jackets to open next season in Stockholm, Sweden.

-

BlueJackets Xtra:

Fredrik Modin is the Jacket most likely on the move before the deadline in March. He has a no-trade clause in his contract so he'll have to approve it first. We'll see where this goes soon.

Finding an identity. The team is starting to regain the attitude they had last year. It may be too little too late, but they're going to make a run for it, I can feel it.

An introspective of Mathieu Garon. Its unfortunate that his role had to be amplified this year, but it was also a blessing in disguise.

-

Yahoo! Sports:

Interview with Sergei Zubov. He talks playing in the KHL, returning to the NHL, and playing in the Olympics.

Injury news: The Coyotes' Upshall is out with a torn ACL, the Stars activate Lehtinen from IR.

Alex the Great strikes again. Captain Ovechkin scores the game winner late in the 3rd to lead the Caps to a franchise record 10 straight wins.

-

TSN.ca:

Remember, people, when things look bad keep this in mind; we could be Oilers fans. After the bad luck they've had recently (1-17-2) since December 11 (sound familiar?) things just got worse. They lose D Souray to a fractured hand.

-

Trade News!:

The trade deadling is just over a month away and things are already getting hot. The Maple Leafs have made deals with Anaheim and Calgary to acquite J.S. Giguere from the Ducks, and Dion Phaneuf, Keith Aulie, and Fredrik Sjostrom from the Flames.

Another deal was made involving Calgary. They're moving Olli Jokinen, and Brandon Prust and to the Rangers for Ales Kotalik, and Chris Higgins.

-

Quote of the day:

"Whether we make the playoffs of not, there's a bigger picture here. We have to let other teams in this league know that we're a hard-working team they have to show up against, just like we were last season."

- R.J. Umberger

Fight of the weekend:

Oilers D Sheldon Souray v. Flames RW Jarome Iginla

Honorable Mention:

Blue Jackets RW Jared Boll v. Blues RW Brad Winchester. Video.

Hard nosed captain

Iginla is a tough customer. Gave Souray a pretty good run for his money there.

Would be great to get a d-man like Souray here, although the Jackets likely aren’t on the list of teams he agreed to be traded to. Too bad :(
