NHL Power Rankings

ATLANTA - NOVEMBER 04: Derick Brassard #16 of the Columbus Blue Jackets reacts after scoring a goal against the Atlanta Thrashers at Philips Arena on November 4 2010 in Atlanta Georgia. (Photo by Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images)

The Power Rankings are now out for week 4. Keep in mind they were posted within the last day or two so they don't reflect the current record of the league.

All in all I'd say the team is finally starting to gain some respect especially from media outlets where they usually don't (CBS Sports, get with the program!)

If you're still cautious and optimistic thats fine, but if you're still in doubt, check your pulse. Good things are coming to Columbus.

Star-divide

SBN - 11th out of 15 (Last week: 9th)

"If you get mathematical with it, the Blue Jackets are not as bad as you think they are."

Yahoo! Sports - 20th out of 30 (Last week: 25th)

"This team had a decent record after 10 games, especially considering the fact they were averaging a 29th-worst 2.3 goals per those 10 contests."

ESPN - 16th out of 30 (Last week: 16th)

"Somehow keeping head above water despite 26th-ranked offense and 26th-ranked power play."

CBS Sports - 28th out of 30 (Last week: 24th)

"No offense, but the Jackets' leading scorer -- Chris Clark -- doesn't have a goal and ranks 113th in the league overall."

TSN - 25th out of 30 (Last week: 26th)

"The Blue Jackets' leading scorer? RW Chris Clark, a healthy scratch for the first two games of the season, who now has six assists in eight games. C Derick Brassard is warming up, however, with four points in the last four games.
Key Injuries: D Mike Commodore (hand), LW Kristian Huselius (lower body)."

The Dispatch - 16th out of 30 (Last week: 21st)

"Until the Blue Jackets' top offensive talents get going -- we're talking to you, Rick Nash and Antoine Vermette -- it's going to be a bumpy ride."

The Hockey News - 10th out of 30 (Last week: 14th)

"Backup goalie Mathieu Garon outplaying No. 1 Steve Mason"

Just to remember, for those voting unfair – most of those rankings came before the Shutout against Montreal. I suspect next week’s rankings will look very different. :)

Enjoy it. :) You might need to get used to the idea of seeing Columbus listed in the top 10.

I concur with your assessment. Didn’t see that coming, but hey, I won’t complain.

I’m still a skeptic guys…guess I have been burned too many times over the last decade. However, if the left coast roadtrip is successful, save me a seat on the bandwagon, eh?

A lot of these guys really pour into the statistics, and, well, (prior to our last two games), the numbers are really quite baffling. How does a team go 8-4 while having the 29th ranked offense, league average (at the time) GAA, and have the top scorer on the team have 6 points? It seems like a puzzle with 1 too many pieces! So yeah, I’d say the timid outlook on our team is warranted for now, because a team that stays 29th in offense is not going to be a top 10 team for long. I think once we start posting W’s with some points from our sexies (like against Montreal and Les Thrash) instead of our 4th line joe-sixpacks, the pundits will warm up in no time!

Give us 4 wins out of the next 6. Have them be solid, top-to-bottom efforts, where, God willing we score more than three goals once, and I’m pretty sure we’ll have most of the hockey community (and a whole lot of jackets fans) convinced that this isn’t just a repeat of last year.

I think the games against STL, COL, and at LA will be good benchmarks. They’re all playing great hockey, and it’ll be good to finally get another divisional game under out belts.

Someone in our division’s gotta knock those Blues down a peg or two, and if the Preds or Hawks can’t do it, might as well be us, am I right?

I’m perfectly ok with it! Should be a really intense game. Here’s hoping the attendance is much higher for it.

I believe the Jacket’s success at the gates will be determined by our record as of the end of Buckeye football. When people stop following the Bucks, and they open their newspapers and see we’ve got a team solidly above .500 and clearly relevant in our division, people will come to see us.

The best thing our team can do for attendance is to survive as a franchise long enough to establish a legacy, a lore, and a cultural footprint on a community. The best things we can do is survive, win, and slowly build a history. It’s a team’s history, and the memories of kids who grew up listening to the “old legends” of a team (like Nash), who end up filling up the seats a decade from now, and they instill those same feelings in THEIR children. And that is how a hockey town is born.

Its not really fair to use the Buckeyes as a scapegoat. I totally agree that after the season is over, more and more people will likely head down to the arena for a great night of hockey, but thats only one day a week. Attendance is usually pretty decent on Saturday’s anyway. I think winning consistently will do the trick, and not just because football season is over.

number 10 out of 30 is a LITTLE bit of a stretch but 16 out of 30 ( i would put them at 14 personally) is a pretty good assessment in my prediction. but 25 out of 30 ( i want what they are smoking!!!) is outrageous. and 28th? who are the two teams worse than them? LA and Detroit? that is just a piss poor assessment.

Yeah I think the 10 is jumping the gun a little bit. Perhaps not after the Atlanta game, but I’d put them in the 12-14 range.

I’m completely content with 12-15, though I can give them the benefit of being skeptical and wary of our last few “promising starts”
