Lets talk trades

The trade deadline is March 4th. Its never too early to talk trades. Its important to really weigh what we have versus what we want and how we can attain it. Plus, its just fun to play GM.

Rumor on the NHL street is there's a certain top line center wearing a "C" in Tampa who has been the topic of trades every year, and this one is no different. Maybe you've heard of him; Vincent Lecavalier.

The only downside to this guy is his salary. 10 million a year through 2016. The cap hit throughout the rest of his contract is 7.727 million, which we can afford. The problem here keeps us from resigning some of our younger talent, unless we shed some of our own salary.

I found a trade machine online but it doesn't seem to be working so lets pretend:

Proposed trade:

CBJ gets:

C Vinny Lecavalier

Tampa Bay gets:

D Mike Commodore

LW Fredrik Modin

LW Mike Blunden or LW Alex Picard

Would you do it? Would either the CBJ or TB do it? We're still desperately looking for the guaranteed #1 center, and Vinny could be it. Plus, how many teams can say they have 3 team captains on it? I don't want this post be specific to Lecavalier, so share your ideas, thoughts, wants, trades, whatever you got.

Your ideas, start throwing!

No way TB goes for this

That trifecta you offered to TB doesn’t look that great to me. If I were TB, I’d have to turn that down – but as a CBJ fan – Man, we can’t get rid of commie soon enough, any trade that involves him is a great deal! Plus we get walking wounded Modin off the books…

Seriously though, don’t you think that any trade for the CBJ will have to include Torres?

by hoosfoos on Jan 19, 2010 3:40 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Do you think they would with Torres instead of Picard/Blunden? Or…you know…that Russian guy…

I figured it wouldn’t be so easy to pry him away.

I don’t think anything would HAVE to involve Raff but if I were a betting man, I’d say it wouldn’t hurt. I really don’t want to see him leave, for many reasons, but he’s getting hot, and on a sinking ship he’s got a high value.

In no way do I want anyone involving the team’s future traded away, and I think Raff is/will be/should be a part of it.

Torres would make it interesting

If Raffi was in there instead of Picard/Blunden, that would be a pretty good group heading out of here, maybe take modin out of and just leave it as Raffi and commie. Vinnie’s #’s have been dropping off the past two seasons… I wonder what the story is with that?

Don’t care, centering Nasher would be a huge boost to both of them IMO.

i like getting rid of modin

but when commodore is healthy he will be worth keeping the season is pretty much over so keep comie i promise itll b worth it

I don’t think that kind of package would fetch Vinny to be honest.

Here are our most tradeable assets: Filatov, Torres, any of our picks.

To get a top player, generally the starting point is Player/Prospect/Pick. Torres, Filatov and our first or second rounder could get us a good player. Maybe even Kaberle, if Burke was willing to go down that road with Filatov. Torres would be a Burkie player, and our first round pick would help offset the loss of theirs in the Kessel trade.

Thoughts?

i like it

trading filatov would be smart…trading raffi i dont think would be too great he is a clutch player..if this were baseball and you had the bases loaded and u were down 3-nothing it the top of the 9th, hes the guy you would want to be batting

Yeah it was just wishful thinking. I would definitely throw in a 1st or 2nd pick though because well, it would be a good one.

Like I said, I think moving Raffi would suck, and I’m really on the fence about Filatov now. Playing GM isn’t as fun as I thought it would be.

I don’t think he’ll be asking for the kind of money Manny “pay me as a top line guy” Malhotra wanted. He loves being in Columbus and while I don’t think he will take a “hometown” discount per se, he’ll listen to any offers management comes up with.

If we’re going to talk Filatov, how about this…

Filatov with a 1st or 2nd to SJ for Dan Boyle – his contract is coming up and who knows if he’ll resign. They might want to move him before the deadline.

Ok, false. Boyle is under contract until 2013/14 then becomes an UFA. He’s only making 6.667 million a year, which is reasonable for us.

Its not like they would need it, but they’re getting a really skilled forward in return, plus a pick to take a top D prospect. Would they bite?

May not need a forward now, but maybe in a couple years...

Which is why Filatov may work for them. He’s still a year or maybe two away from making an impact in the NHL. (At least I think…) Anyway – that’s giving up a lot of youth for a guy who is 33/34 years old

We have Clarkie, Freddy Mo, and Sammy though. I know Freddy is gone after this year, maybe even by the trade deadline…side note: did you know he has so much trade value you can actually see it with the naked eye?…so I don’t think the team should try to over-do it with vets. Eventually, one of them would have to take a roster spot from one of the youngsters and thats a no-no.

Filatov...

To those of you who are still “on the fence” about Filatov, I think you are missing one key point…As far as were concerned, this town ain’t big enough for Hitchcock and Filatov. I dont know about you guys, but I’m still a Hitch fan. Let’s move Filatov and a draft pick for a #1 center. Were not getting anywhere until we have one, and Brassard is still a couple years away, thats if he ever pans out as a # 1 at all.

by Labatt Blueliners on Jan 22, 2010 5:31 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Pro-Filatov

Being that I’m fairly pro-Filatov, I’d rather not see us get rid of this kid. Quite frankly, if we (or Hitch) are afraid of one forward being our defensive downfall, we’ve got some terribly messed up priorities. If we wanted to shift Filatov, I’d say it should only be for some top-notch D-men. And even there, I don’t think that’s a good choice.

Clearly things haven’t worked out in goal or on defense quite as desired this year. However, we’ve also hit these terrible cold spots in scoring. I say, why not give Filatov the chance to help us out? If he had 2 goals in 13 games and with practically zero ice time this year, can you imagine what would have happened if Hitch chose to give him time with skilled players?

I realize the mesh with Hitch and Filatov isn’t great, but I think for the benefit of this team we need firepower. Moving Filatov may cost us too much and not be worth the return.

by zekebud on Jan 22, 2010 6:30 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Also, I’m not sold on Hitchcock. I realize defense is all well and good, but trampling on the growth of a young offense isn’t such a great idea. Hitch has had success running teams with veterans. I’m not convinced of his benefit on this team of young players.

My Pens friends were making similar comments last year leading up to the Michel Therrien firing. Yeah, he led them to the Cup Finals, but did not really mesh with the players, so they sacked him. Extreme example, but things seemed to turn out well for them by dropping the D first mentality all the time.

by zekebud on Jan 22, 2010 6:43 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Filatov laid down an ultimatum...

…no chance he returns until a coaching change takes place… That pretty much means he’s got to be traded based on management’s apparent leniency with regard to winning under Hitch. Unfortunately, his value has dropped recently. Here’s to hoping CSKA makes the playoffs and wins the KHL cup, whatever that is called.

I agree on the virtues of scoring and that’s how you win games, but IMHO the biggest problem the blue jackets have is on defense, and that the defense, not the forwards, is actually what is limiting the scoring potential of this club. I think if we get a couple top 4 d men via trade or in the offseason, it will allow the young talent we have on the roster now to reach it’s potential.

Ilya Kovalchuk

Out of curiosity, why aren’t we talking about Kovalchuk? We seem to have a decent system such that we can lose a few players to get him. We’ve got the cap space to take a hit on picking him up (nhlnumbers.com). Getting Kovalchuk would almost negate any need for a top-tier center. Yeah, he’s a left wing, but just put Nash-Umberger-Kovalchuk up front. That would be magical.

I admit, there are two problems I see in getting Kovalchuk. One, we don’t seem to be willing to take a big cap hit lately. Two, putting that kind of firepower up front might not mesh with the Hitch system. However, I still think the prospect of having Nash and Kovalchuk on the same line is totally worth it… especially if that means Chicago doesn’t get him.

Something tells me it would take an awful lot to pry him away from Atlanta. I know they have a ton of issues right now surrounding their team but they’re going to fight to keep him.

I can only hope and wish that if the Jackets make any moves at the deadline, its the big one. I want to hear that we made the biggest and best deals this year. For once, I want that to be my team. Tired of hearing about everyone else picking up that star guy who’s going to make their team 100 times better. Its our turn.

We're not a contender

He’s already done the rebuilding thing in Atlanta. Seeing as he has as much say in where he goes as the team mgmt, I think he’ll end up with a team still in the playoff hunt, which removes the BJ’s from the picture

Still worth a shot to be honest. Yeah, we’re out of it this year, but who is to say this wasn’t a fluke year.

What if:
Brass turns it around, Mase shakes off the sophomore slump, we’re stingy on D, and our top lines are scoring at will? Having another star on the team like Kovalchuk could elevate them to the top of the league.

I'm with you on that one - definitely worth a shot, but....

If all those if’s come to pass, man oh man what a season it will be next year! I’m really hoping this season is just “growing pains” as the organization is saying, and that CBJ will be a force to be reckoned with come next year… I know kovy is one of the elite talents in the league, but considering his UFA at the end of this season, I just don’t see how it will be attainable for anyone other than large market teams pulling 18-20K fans on a regular basis for home games. Think of what he will be asking for this offseason – the sky’s the limit!

Quite a few sources

are saying Raffi is on a lot of team’s radars.

As we move into February with the shortened schedule, watch to see if Raffi starts becoming a healthy scratch. It’ll probably be the first signs of him being moved. It happened to Jody Shelley a few years back.

I really think it would be a mistake to move him. I’m convinced this year is a fluke and next year will be infinitely better, and he’ll be an even bigger part of what we want to accomplish. Again, at this point its speculation but I figure I’d throw it out there for everyone to digest.

What's he worth?

Does anyone have a guess as to what Raffi will be looking for in terms of dollars and term? I agree that he is one veteran that would be great to hold on to. His intangibles alone are infectious, not to mention his propensity to score in clutch situations. He’s making 2.75M this season… Hard to know what Howson will do since I don’t know what financial “ceiling” he’s working with, it’s obviously not the cap since we’re nowhere near that

by hoosfoos on Jan 27, 2010 10:34 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

If I had to take a guess, which is all this is, I’d say no more than 4M. Its a bonus compared to this year’s salary but not really over the top. Not sure on length…

If I were Howson, and I wanted to extend him here’s my offer:
3 years worth 11M. It works out to 3.33M per year, still leaves us with breathing room under the cap and we hang on to him for a few more years to work with the younger guys as they develop. Worst case scenario, we could still get a decent return in a trade if it came to it.

Thoughts anyone?

Coaching

I’d like to see where the CBJ goes with coaching wise, next season. They are behind Hitch but with this season it is evident that the Jackets trying to be a young success story, like the Kings and Isles this year. Problem is Hitch don’t like to develop, it requires too much moving on his part… so if Jackets wanna stay young AND competitive? then I think Hitch takes a walk for his health and bring in a guy who can really let our young talent show, bring back Filatov too….

If Hitch stays, I can see a deal going down involving someone like Filatov for someone more developed…Dan Boyle would be awesome in this town.

If Hitch leaves, I can see holding on to some younger assets, giving them game time, and trimming some of the unnecessary parts from the team. (Modin has been on my waiver wish list for few seasons now)

I say it all depends on Howson and his devotion to Hitch….I don’t think Hitch fits into the real mentality of what Howson is trying to work so hard for here in Columbus, because it is not how he coaches, it is just not his style….If Hitch is staying maybe CBJ should just abandon a plan of having a team of young 20 somethings because under Ken Hitchcock they will never bare fruit and just be a waste of time, money, and effort.

I would also trade...

Modin was mentioned before, but I think Commodore was grossly over-paid to play here. Get rid of him. For the things he gets paid to do and doesn’t….no thanks.

Brass and Huse, I’m on the fence with. Brassard had an excellent start last season and then got injured and never got back to form (I feel he could be used in a trade and because of his obvious potential). Huse just seems like he is constantly snake-bitten, poor guy too. Huse I can see keeping on a bit longer just because the guy works hard but gets nothing out it. Maybe if Ol’ Uncle Howson will get off his wallet and finally open it up to bring in Lecavalier or Boyle or Kovalchuk….Huse will get his ‘juice’ back.

Chris Clark is another player like Modin that you respect but I hope isn’t a player that we find some weird bond to and can’t seem to let him go of. Just not the numbers or the player we need in the Jackets locker room.

all this is just opinion and again, depends on the coaching situation next season.

Brass needs to stay. Yeah he’s having a bad year, probably got nervous with all the expectations early in the season and just didn’t get over it. Sucks, but he’ll figure it out.

Juice is a streaky player, we all know that, and we have to live with it for now. I just don’t think he’s going to be moved.

He’s one of the few guys that we signed that made me really excited about where the team was going. First Foote, then Fedorov. But just because you piece together a roster with guys who were successful years ago, and on some really good teams, doesn’t mean you’re going to have anything special.

brass should only stay if hitch leaves, he will never develop if both stay….

problem with being patient with huse being streaky is you have a whole team made of streaky players….cappy nash is just as guilty.

jurcina might work out, but clark is just another over-the-hill player that has some moves left but is not working on a full tank anymore. sorry, i like the veteran presence he has but if we hold on to him like we do Modin, I’ll puke….what do some of these players do to keep getting contracts, I don’t know, but they do. I would much rather see Chimera still wearing our colors.
