New Rumors

With Sergei Zubov signing in the KHL it ends speculation that he would soon be in Jacket-land. In reality it would be difficult to add his salary without subtracting from the current payroll. Thus the rumors.

It is obvious that we still need a puck moving defender and Eric Smith the CBJ blogger at Hockeybuzz has a couple rumors on the blog.

First, we were rumored to be talking to Montreal for Roman Hamrlik. On the out would be Klesla and Modin. While I'm sure this was considered, it doesn't seem to make us markedly better and this is probably why nothing has materialized. Hamrlik is a good defender, in fact a better version of Klesla. He's 35 years old, do we see him here in the long term? Hamrlik is also signed for this year AND next year at 5.5 million. Way too much in my opinion. There are much better fixes. I do see Modin as being a part of a possible package, but the value does not seem to be there in this deal. Bad deal in my eyes.

Second is perhaps the juicier, which is our supposed interest in Tomas Kaberle. Even though, Brian Burke has said that he will not trade Kaberle he has about 13 NHL defenders and one of the worst top six forward groups in the league. If you had Kaberle, Brassard, Vermette to this team all year, we could be a Cup Contender with a bit of luck. I'm not joking. I believe Kaberle will be moved. The question is, for what?

The player that would jump to me as being interesting is Umberger. However with Umberger's holdout on Burke, he's not high on his list. He also didn't include him among the best 16 American forwards. He's a Burke style player, but I can't see him being the fit here. I'm kind of glad to, because I love RJ and his guts.

That leaves me puzzled honestly about who could be interesting. If Burke wanted Huselius, he could just sign Tanguay. Voracek will likely not be on the table. I can imagine that Burke might have interest in Boll. He loves big forwards and some may believe he still has offensive upside, but Boll in no way can be the centerpiece. Filatov would probably be the only tradeable centerpiece. If we could package Modin's salary with Filatov, that might be the only thing I can imagine working, however that might be short sighted. I don't see us being a great fit with Toronto.

We are still in the market for a puck mover. I think it's fair to say that we are not into Babchuk because we could have made that deal.... What do you think? Fire Away

Interesting

Very very interesting article. As I have posted on here before, I am a huge Boll fan. I could understand why Boll could be brought up in trade talks with his energy and size. RJ would be hard for me to understand with his draft year hold out with Burke. So I throw RJ out the window with anything Burke related (don’t get me started on the Team USA snub). Trade Modin for a new girl for the pepsi crew and ill be happy. I still wouldn’t be happy with any Filatov trade talk until at LEAST next summer (give him a full year eh?). Very good look at two possible d-men but not sure if I like the Jacket players included in these trade rumors (except Modin). Respond to this and let me know what you think guys!

Not sure how I feel about this.

I would like to know a little bit more about Hamrlik and Kaberle. Can either be a legit upgrade or would it be us making a move just to make a move? I honestly don’t like any of the exiting players involved except Modin. Obviously that won’t be enough to wet anyone’s appetite. I don’t like it.

Just went back to something Dan J posted...

what about Marc-Andre Bergeron? Is he still available? Would be easier to sign a free agent than lose anyone in a trade…

No

AP at puck-rakers said their is no truth to it. Would be a nice to story to read if the rumor was true.

To see into Scott Howson's mind...

would be a great ability right now. Now that my favorite guy (Zubov) is off the market, I’m struggling to find a puck-moving D-man the Jackets could land. Seidenberg was talked up, but apparently he’s asking too much, and I’m not willing to buy based on one good season.

Kaberle would be great, but as Clint mentioned, I don’t see a trade working out between Columbus and Toronto. Howson likely isn’t willing to give up what Burke would ask in return.

I’m starting to think that, with the recent signing of Methot, the team is willing to let their guys (Tyutin and Russell) develop rather than bring in someone to provoke offense on the back end. I liked Bergeron, but never said that he was a target. I don’t think the Columbus brass ever considered him.

Since Scott Howson took over, he’s added some pieces, but I believe his main goal is to build from within and let guys develop into solid pieces of the puzzle rather than sign a quick fix. I could be wrong, but we’ll just have to see what happens.

I really really really would have loved to have Zubov on this team though.

I totally agree…..The future is with Tyutin and Russell. Maybe if things don’t go so well during the first half of the season, we’ll see a trade.

5 years

Light bulb……..everyone get out their hockey crystal ball of knowledge……..Will we be praising Howsen in 5 years for what he has done since he became GM or will we be questioning some of his moves? Any why.

Ryan

P.S. My crystal ball has us praising Howsen for mainly his patience.

Heil Howson

I trust the man to finally build this franchise.

In the name of Howson, Nash, and the Holy Mase, Amen.

I do believe that we are shopping around for a defender.

Portzy does shoot down a lot of rumors, but there likely is some truth to it. I’m sure there are teams calling us for deals with puckmoving defenders that they do not want, that is where these rumors are likely coming from. Montreal calls us with this Hamrlik deal, someone leaks it, we have no interest. It doesn’t mean there isn’t some fact to the rumor, it could have been offered, but in no way does that mean it is being considered by us.

At this point Kaberle doesn’t make sense to me. Ehrhoff is the most likely moved player that fits what we want, but San Jose seems to have their name in a lot of other rumors.

I’ll only include Kaberle’s scouting report here, the Hamrlik deal does not make sense.

Assets: Possesses tremendous hockey smarts and the ability to find his teammates with excellent passes. A swift skater, he loves to join the attack. Defends well.

Flaws: Still makes occasional mistakes when pinching in. Could use more strength to better handle big NHL forwards. Doesn’t shoot enough on the power play.

Doesn’t shoot enough on the power play.

Which is exactly what we need. No thanks. Definitely time to make a move for Ehrhoff.

to blazer

rumer was that columbus offered Chimera for Erhoff strait up ( to which SJ told us to f off im sure and don’t blame them.) i think Klesla Modin and maybe a 2nd rounder would be a good deal for him.

by FFMorgan on Jul 31, 2009 8:32 PM EDT reply actions

San Jose can’t take on any salary. They are already close to bumping up against the cap, and are still a few men short of a full roster. That’s why they’d be looking to deal Ehrhoff in the first place. To be honest, I’m not exactly sure what type of return they’re looking for, but I’m thinking something like Chimera + a prospect (perhaps one that’s NHL ready) would be more likely.

If they can’t make any other moves between now and mid-September, something HAS to give. Chimera for Ehrhoff would be looking pretty attractive to them then.

Would mid-September help San Jose be any farther from the cap? I guess its my lack of the business side of hockey, but I can’t understand why they would be ok with it in September as opposed to now.

No, sorry… I meant because by mid-September (training camp) they need to have a full roster. They have to shed some salary and get some cheaper players in there no matter what by the time the season starts and still be under the salary cap.

That’s why, if they’re running out of options, a deal that they may not love is the only option left. That’s pretty much how we ended up with Tyutin last summer.

Thanks for clarifying

That makes sense. What was Ehrhoff making last year, and how would his salary fit the Jackets budget?

NHL Numbers is my favorite source for contract/salary cap info. His cap hit is $3.1 million for 2 more years.

I think the Jackets would be fine taking on his salary, as long as they’re moving someone like Chimera who helps cut the difference in what they’re taking back. But I don’t know if they like Ehrhoff enough to go out of their way to acquire him.

I just don’t think Scott is really wanting to go into camp with the D that we have, I really believe he will swing a deal once training camp gets here and teams must cut some salary….I believe it is a must to get that puck moving D man if we really want to improve.

Scott Howson

You know what…really…I don’t care what we do right now. To me Scott Howson has proven to me to be a very capable and intelligent GM. I believe we made a huge steal hiring him as our GM. He has been brilliant in almost every way and in almost every decision. If we sign a free agent great! If we trade for someone great! If we don’t even do anything at all…GREAT! I trust Howson and it is he who has made us into a contender. He knows what we need, he knows what we can afford, and he knows who needs to go and who needs to be traded for. Rumors are great, but really they are just fun comics to read.

Good to have you on board!

I agree, Howson is probably the most underrated GM in the NHL. He can be so quiet that Blue Jackets fans (myself included) don’t always notice just how much he’s done in 2 years.
