Nash Commentary

By now most CBJ fans have wet their pants over Nash's comments in the Dispatch. The Cannon is going to chime in with their opinion... It's not a big deal.

It is my belief we offered something like a 5 year 35 million dollar deal. When Mary Ann Gaborik signs a 5 year 37.5 million dollar deal yesterday... it doesn't look good.

FACT - Nash knows what he is worth. He knows he could get maybe even 8+ million in the open market next year.

FACT - It is in Howson's best interest to get a cheaper deal to acquire more talent.

This is negiotation.

My theory is this, Howson went to Nash to sell him on the plan. Nash loves it. He loves the city. He loves the team. The plan is likely very good. Howson is probably thinking "Rick, likes the plan, we can really be a great great team. We can win a cup or two, so... if I get him to sign a cheaper deal I can put more talent around him. I want that and Rick wants that."

Rick on the other hand wants to get paid. Market value. The plan is great and certainly the plan would work much better if Rick signed a cheaper deal, but what incentive is there for him to do it? Other teams have great plans. Other teams will pay him too.  That's his leverage.

Howson likely made a mistake with what I presume is around a 7 million a year average. If we did offer a 10 year deal, frontloaded, Nash would likely not be upset with it. Since it is a 5 year deal, these are Nash's prime years, he knows he is worth more than that.

The two ways this will work is a 4-5 year deal with about an 8 million dollar price tag...or.... a 10-12 year deal with about a 7 million per price tag.

This is the deal that I would offer.

10 years 70 million:  12, 12, 8, 8, 6, 6, 5, 5, 4, 4

Here is the logic: Nash gets paid up front. He can dump into into the stock market right now and make a killing by the end of this deal. We show him the love. The single biggest yearly salary of any player in the league.

Year 1: Brassard Needs Resigned : Modin and Torres off the books

Year 2: Voracek and Mason need Resigned

Year 3: Filatov Need Resigned

This is the type of deal we need to sell Nash on. Upfront major love (while we have plenty of budget room), lower numbers later on when we are conteding for a cup.

If Nash wants more. Tack an extra million on each of those numbers, 10 years 80 million.

Overall this is not a big deal. Nash wants to be here. I fully expect him to have his extension signed in a few days. This is just a side of Nash we don't see often because he is generally low key and always says the right things. Remember what he told MacLean when Doug told him he didn't know if he would be there at #3. Rick: "Well, trade up to get me." He knows his value, he wants his value. We need him. We will sign him.

Reasonable analysis – seems to line up with the rest of what I’m hearing.

Here’s hoping Nash’s counteroffer comes back to Howson and the rest proceeds quickly from there!

Am I worried at all? no…Is there reason for concern in Columbus? probably not…what I want to know is why Howson only offered a 5-year deal? Yes its just a rumored term but lets pretend that was it. Unless there is some underlying thought process going on in Howson’s head, I don’t get it.

The idea is to get him locked up for about 10 years right? Nash’s comments were a little un-Nashlike but he’s a guy that knows what he’s able to get.

I’m very curious to see what his counteroffer is.

I agree with your analysis. I really don’t think the deal will take too long to get done. Thinking positively, maybe a couple more days.

Nash might come back a little high with the counter-offer, but I think it won’t be much higher than Howson is willing to go and it will get done.

The Puck-Rakers update kind of fits what my commentary says earlier. It will all come together. No worries.

here is how i see it...

Gaborik i think is a very good model for a contract. (Marion Hossa is an even better comparison both had 40 goal seasons last year only Hossa has produced more then nash has with less talent in Atlanta) Nash might get a little more then Gaborik but in my opinion he isn’t worth much more then 8 million a year ( im gonna get bashed for this i understand but hear me out.) Crysby and Malkin each make 8.7 a year. ( Nash is no Crosby or Malkin) Zetterberg is making about 6.05 or something like that. granted he wanted to stay in Detroit more then Nash wants to stay in columbus (probably) and pavel Datsyuk (who in my opinion is the Best overall player in the world) is only making 6.7 so it is ludicris to think that Nashis worth more then 8 million. the man has broken 70 pts ONCE in his career. 60 pts Twice. I understand that he hasn’t had that much talent around him but he should still produce more then what he has to get the kind of money he wants. And you have to remember the cap trouble the jackets are going to be put in if they sign him to more then a 10 year 80 million dollar contract ( front loading won’t work be cause the cap hit is the AVERAGE of the ENTIRE LENGTH of the contract. Filatov will be up in no more then 4 years. Brassard is up next year (same year as nash) and Voracek will be up the year after that. not to mention Vermette next year as well. or what about Mason in two years? I’d say offer him a 7 year 55 million that is a cap hit of 7.8 million a year. hopefully that will allow enough room to resign Brassard Voracek Filatov and Mason. ( CBJ may have to dump Commodore and/or Huselious for cap space.) this whole thing worries me because if Nash gets too big of a contract then the the future is shot…

All valid points but I don’t think there’s any need to worry. Every player (and every contract) is tradeable. Look at Scott Gomez.

a good deal if the negotiations go south.

what do you all think of this?…

Send Nash to Toronto for Luke Schenn, two 1st round picks and a forward ( not a big name forward but someone) gives columbus two HIGH draft picks and a very good YOUNG defensman.

or Possibly to Atlanta for Zack Bogosian and two first rounders (again two top 5 picks) and a very good puck moving young Defensman.either way they would have a VERY good deal for Rick Nash this is all assuming he doesn’t resign.

so if this were to happen C-bus would look something like this.

Huselious Brassard Voracek
Filatov Vermette Umberger
Chimera Phalsson Torres
Modin Murry Boll

Commodore Hejda
Tyutin Klesla
Bogosian Russel.

and then use the two picks to draft very strong Forwards.

just my take on things…
