in regards to the goalie situation
do you think maybe, just maybe we give lacosta a shot as our back-up? i’m sure kevin lalande can handle the workload with syracuse, and we wouldn’t have to spend the money on a free agent.
Blazer,
Let me give you a scenario.
It’s April. The team is about 4 wins out of a playoff spot. Mason is a little tired, a little achy, and he feels like some guys are figuring him out and trying to rattle him in the cage. And we’re going into that “fun” stretch that the NHL sets up every year with back to back games against Detroit, St. Louis, and Chicago.
So after talking to the Goalie coaches, some of the D, and maybe even Hitch, he decides to sit down with his backup and ask how he handles this type of situation – get a few tips and maybe see if that backup’s seen anything that he can use to give himself that little push to help see the team through the rocks and shoals.
And Dan LaCosta looks at him blankly and says. “Dude, I have no freaking idea.”
That’s why we need a veteran backup.
good point.
a couple things come to mind. a) i would hope any of the three groups you mentioned, the D, goalie coaches, and hitch, could give him the insight he would need. b) granted, he is young, i’m sure lacosta is smart enough to provide something useful.
i understand the need for a veteran goalie, but mason saw a whole lot last year. he’s only going to learn from last years mistakes and get better. maybe its just wishful thinking, but having a one-two punch like mason-lacosta (from seeing lacosta work last year) would probably give us the best goalie corps in the league. i like the idea of promoting from within, more than going out and buying help in net, and then being able to use that money in another area of need.

I don’t disagree that LaCosta shows signs of being really good – but I think it’s worth letting him sharpen his edge by being the #1 (or at least in a 1-A, 1-B situation) down in Syracuse rather than sitting for probably 50+ games. His time will come. Probably in a year or two. It’s just not quite there yet.
Agree. I think I posted this in another comment, but it’s worth posting again.
LaCosta is still very young for a goalie. He did a great job last year, and is really looking more promising than ever. But give him time. He’s not the type of player that would be hurt by playing in Syracuse for at least another year.

I like seeing you put Mayorov at #2.
In fact, I think it’s going to inspire me to write a new post…

how amazing would a line like mayorov, voracek, and filatov be in the next few years?

Any combination is really mouthwatering.
Imagine a line of Nash-Brassard-Voracek in its prime.

this upcoming season, either of those lines looks like a definite possibility. we can make some lethal combinations to throw at anyone.
any word on if we are making an offer to bouwmeester? he’s a big tough defenseman i would want to pair with commodore just to bully opposing lines around.
also, whats the status of our offer to malhotra? he’s definitely a veteran presense i want back next season.

I would assume there would at least be an offer or inquiry sent out to Bouwmeester, but who knows if any real negotiating would take place.
No word on Malhotra. I believe Portzline or Reed of the Dispatch said the talks are still underway, but there’s no rush, and no timetable, on a deal getting done. He does seem to be the only priority to the Blue Jackets prior to July 1st.

Allen York
My gut feeling is that Allen York will be jumping up this list next year in a substantial way. A much more solid defense in front of him and now RPI will be adding major forward talent (for the first time in a long time) this year and potentially next year as well.
York took the reigns for the team in the ECAC Playoffs last year and won three games (2 against Dartmouth, 1 against Cornell) as well as earning a shutout against #2 seed Cornell in the second round. Watching York play down the stretch sealed my opinion of him. He’s a cool customer and doesn’t rattle even under the most obscene kinds of duress, makes some huge saves and plays very big in the net.
I know the goalie future doesn’t look overwhelmingly promising given what there is in Syracuse, but York could emerge as a stud in a couple of years, something I look forward to watching as an RPI follower.
