Joe Thornton to CBus? (Ek Rumor) Enter at your Own Risk

"*The Blue Jackets are talking a SERIOUS trade with San Jose, possibly for Joe Thornton (who has been called untouchable." http://www.hockeybuzz.com/blog/Eklund/Kaberle-Lecavalier-Gionta-Jay-Bo-Nash-Heatley-to-LA-for-Frolov-Spezza/1/21725

This one is just too juicy to pass up. Eklund of course is usually never right, but you can't deny that he has sources. Thornton would be an option that would need to be fully explored if it is in fact on the table.

First is it realisitic? Howson has said any trade talks have been dealing with picks? Can there be any merit to this? Make your own call.

The second and most important thing is: could we acquire a player like Joe Thornton? For the first time in our history we can say, yes. One of the untouchables would need to certainly be touched. That means Brassard, Voracek, or Filatov would be included. As would Klesla or Russell. We might be able to throw Modin in to balance salary.

Joe Thornton is signed this year and next year for 7.2 million dollars. He is 29 years old.

If this is possible I would go all in for him. I really would. He would be one of the few players I'd honestly trade good players for. For a number of reasons.

1) He and Nash are good friends going back to the lockout year.

2) We would we be guaranteed to make the playoffs for the entire time he is here.

3) We would have a PP

4) Nash would not have to carry all of the mail.

5) He is signed reasonably

6) Although he has had playoff struggles. He showed a lot more heart this year. As he gets older, he'll get a lot more serious about winning the cup. (Check out his fight with Getzlaf on Youtube)

7) He is a bonafied number 1 center.

I'd really really explore this, even if the cost were Brassard + Chimera + Russell. Many will come to Brassard's defense. Believe me I get this. I get the economics too, but the reality is Joe Thornton's do not come available very often.

An interesting nugget is that SJ is rumored to be in on Lecavalier in that same article (consider the source) but the pieces we deal may end up in Tampa to fill their needs in this possible scenario.

Joe Thornton

I would like to see him in a Jackets sweater but I have no interest in seeing Brassard gone. I understand what a deal like this would require but I would not deal Brassard. That’s just my personal opinion. I would understand if management chose to do otherwise.

Wow Wow Wow. What a deal this would be. So many good things and bad things. The current for the future is the big thing that strikes me. I hope we make the right choice with the right player for the current and the future of this team. Very exciting to see.

Offer

I am ok with Giving up the 16th pick and Kris Russel or Jake Voracek, along with another pick in next years draft (1st or 2nd maybe?). Both will be great players but neither will be a Joe Thorton at any point of their career. Derrick Brassard should be untouchable as Steve Mason or even more. Nikita would be a “gulp, well if we have to” kind of deal.

I would not give up Voracek, Mason, or Nash. Everything else is on the table.

I’d probably be willing to give up Filatov+Klesla+1st.

Last year when the Marleau rumors were hot, I was always willing to package Brassard. It sucks to trade young prospects with a lot of promise, but there’s something to be said for getting a proven center that has experience.

I haven’t looked at San Jose’s depth at wing anytime recently, but this could be an opportunity to clear out our logjam. I feel like Chimera could have some value given his good pricetag.

Russell is an option if Howson is comfortable pursuing someone better in free agency or through another trade. I’d prefer moving Klesla, especially if the previously rumored interest in someone like Beauchemin is true (both for price and the top 4 spot).

How about...

Filatov+Klesla+1st for Thornton

Huselius-Thornton-Nash
Umberger-Brassard-Voracek
Chimera-Vermette-Torres
Modin-Pahlsson-Dorsett

Beauchemin-Tyutin
Hejda-Commodore
Russell-Methot

Mason
Conklin

Oh man. Now I’m pumped for free agency. I thought I’d at least make it through the draft before the ball started rolling…

keep future together.

Joe Thornton is a good regular season player no doubt about that. but why give up the very promising future for an older player who doesn’t show up for the playoffs. Filatov Brassard Voracek Nash Mason are all untouchables. there is plenty of depth at Defense. here is what i think would be a good deal.

Package the 1st rounder this year and Klesla, and if SJ really needs a prospect then throw in Stefan Leigen and then next years first round pick. which if columbus continues to get better will probably be in the 20-25 range. that would be ideal since Klesla isn’t any type of player that couldn’t be easily replaced but is still solid enough to have SOME trade value. plus Stefan Leigen would be a top prospect had he not “retired” and since then he hasn’t really fit in with Columbus. Also Modin would help by unloading his salary (3.5 million is a little much for a 3rd or 4th liner) and also give SJ a solid power forward that when healthy is good for about 15-20 goals and then of coarse SJ would get two mid to late first rounders for him. and then push HARD for a true number one D-man for the power play. any of these players would surely help the horrible power play.

Matheuw Schnieder
Sergie Zubov
Jay Bowmeester (would be very difficult to lure to columbus for a worthy price)
Matius Ohlund.

This way Columbus keeps there very good prospects
       Trade from SJ
Nash Thornton Voracek
Huselious Brassard Umberger
Filatov Vermette Chimera
Boll Malholtra Torres

Commodore Zubov (FA pick up from Dallas)
Tyutin Hejda
Russel Methot

Mason
Fernandez (FA pick up from Boston)

Ask yourself if it passes the sniff test. Does the 16th Overall, Klesla, and Legein make you want to deal Thornton? Do you think another team could top that? No way that one would fly.

Andy: I’d hate to deal Filatov because he is our only right handed scorer. In your lineup the only rightie would be Dorsett.

True, that’s something to consider. That said, upgrading talent all throughout the lineup will certainly help, even if we’re still plagued with lefties.

throwing in a second first rounder would. two first rounders a solid prospect and Klesla (and like i said throw in modin) would be a good price tag for a team that wants a Team makeover.
