Blue Jackets unrestricted free agents

Just a quick look at the Blue Jackets upcoming free agents, their salary from this past year, and a quick note on their performance. The first part of this list will include all unrestricted free agents. All numbers were found on NHLnumbers.com. Salary is listed in parenthesis in millions of dollars.

Manny Malhotra (1.500) - Top priority among unrestricted free agents. Versatile third line center that has played well when called on for top line duty. The biggest question mark will be how much does he expect to make. He's not a top line center, but played well enough to be next to Rick Nash for the majority of the season. One of the top face-off men in the NHL.

Star-divide

Jason Williams (2.200) - played extremely well in Columbus after a bad start in Atlanta. Does he want to be a complimentary player on a good team making an average salary, or does he want to cash in again and go through the motions playing for a bad team? He was one of the more clutch players on the Blue Jackets roster, behind perhaps only RJ Umberger. A right-handed shot, too.

Mike Peca (1.315) - His role and effectiveness has diminished greatly in just the last year. He was no longer a top face-off man, and was often outspoken in the media despite being one of the poorer performers on the team.

Chris Gratton (1.250) - Only a couple games played for the Blue Jackets. A late waiver pick-up by Columbus, did not find a role here, but look OK in the games he played. Most of his season was spent with Tampa Bay's AHL affiliate.

Craig MacDonald (.515) - One of the top Crunch call-ups during a key stretch halfway through the season that kept playoff hopes alive. But the Crunch may need some different veteran faces, something didn't work right this year. He wouldn't see more than a few games in Columbus if re-signed.

Mike York (.750) - Played poorly when called up. Not sure if there's much left in the tank. 6 teams in the last 9 years. He most recent good season in the NHL was 2005-06 when he had 52 points in 75 games. The last 4 seasons he hasn't put up more than 14 points in a year.

Christian Backman (3.400) - Can I have the number of your agent?

Aaron Rome (.544) - Wasn't as impressive this year as last, but is a solid defenseman to have when needed. There will be some decisions to make when it comes to retaining guys like Rome and Tollefsen.

Wade Dubielewicz (.500) - Couldn't ask for a better teammate. There just wasn't enough trust in his ability to have him relieve Mason. Phone number will be on speed dial if other options fall through.

Tomorrow, I will look at the Blue Jackets restricted free agents. Who would you keep?

what do the jackets need to move to the next step....

i always loved manny in columbus…he should def. stay with us. The other names not so impressed with this season….maybe backman? rome? and a very very very very very slight maybe to dubie….but i’d rather not see him back up mase. And yes, i’m a philly flyers fan but im in OH and i do love the jackets just as much…

I agree about Manny. He means a lot more to us than he would another team. I hope he stays.

Yeah.

he is one of the best kept secrets, great face-off man and tons of grit and ice smarts…our guys are so under credited besides Rick. I love Nash and his superb style of play but need to lock him down and give him that supporting case that is slowly starting to form. Nash, Huse, Mase, Vermette, Choo Choo…Malhotra is a name that should def. be with and stay with the team for the next season and so on.

Malhotra’s a good choice since he can be had for a reltively low cost and is a good two-way center. I really don’t want to see much more of him oon the first line, though. Brassard showed enough for me last year, and if he can stay healthy he’s the guy I want between Nash and Huselius.

I think Manny will stay if the money is right, but Howson’s going to be very careful about not going crazy here.

Someone made the point the other day that Williams, for his faults, is one of the few guys on the team who does think “shoot!” before he thinks “pass!”. The Jackets can really use more shooters. If the money is right (esp. if he’s willing to take about the same money on a one or two year deal?), I could see him back, too.

agreed.

very good point. it does seem like we try to pass around too much and then try to pass to Nash for him to score….that doesn’t always seem to work out that well. Having some more sniper type players would be an excellent addition. Once we get offense rolling, Columbus will be taken VERY seriously by the rest of the league for sure.

Bringing up Filatov.

Filatov will fill the role as a second shooter for columbus. i could see him begin very much like Kovalchuck. or maybe even Ovechkin ( not so much as talent wise but style.) i personally would like to see Jason Williams back. he is a good fit for columbus. Backman and Peca will both be shown the door. and i could see Modin being traded before the draft for a mid round pick. here is how i see the jackets next year.

Huselious Brassard Nash
FilatovVermette Umberger
Chimera Malholtra Torres.
Boll Williams Voracek.

Commodore Hejda
Tyutin Klesla
Russel Methot.

Mason
LaCosta

although with Joe Thornton on the Block i would love to see him in columbus and push each of the centers down and drop Murry. Boll im not real impressed with him anyway.

Not a bad thought process, although I’d certainly get a veteran back-up to play behind Mason. But based on players currently on our payroll, that’s a decent line-up.

What interests me is, especially if Filatov gets called up, what happens to Voracek? I don’t see how you can logically put a player on the 4th line who had rookie point totals as good as Rick Nash. He was also one of three players (Umberger and Klesla the other two) that was up to the challenge against the Red Wings in all 4 playoff games. I think Voracek has solidified his spot in the top 6 next year. Either he’ll play with Umberger and Vermette again, or playing on the top line which would allow Nash to move back to the left side.

Based on our current roster, I’d do something more like..

Huselius-Brassard-Nash
Umberger-Vermette-Voracek
Filatov-Malhotra-Torres
Chimera-Williams-Dorsett
Murray

Modin and Boll are the odd men out.
