Rumor: Brian Lee for Filatov

On the drive home today I heard a snippet on the radio that we may be interested in defender Brian Lee of the Ottawa Senators. This was on The Fan and I was expecting to find the rumor elsewhere on the internet because the Fan is often not the first on a scoop.

My first thought is... wasn't he a highly though of first rounder? A nice right shot defender that could play a little powerplay and had the size to play in the defensive zone. The knack has been that he isn't physical enough... This led to my second thought... isn't this Anton Stralman?

While I do think that we need to upgrade our defense, I'm not sure that Lee does that. While it is just a rumor, it's the first I've heard on the season. I'm not sure what Ottawa would want in return, but I'm sure we are offering one of our extra wings now the Freddy Mo is coming back into the lineup... for a few games.

MAJOR EDIT:

It was brought to my attention that this was officially tweeted by Aaron Portzline. I don't tweet. I Puckrake.

In my opinion. I trade Filatov. It is obvious to me that Filatov will not be a great NHL player for us within the next 2 years. If that's the case then he will struggle to get ice time with Hitch behind the bench and Nash, Huselius, Voracek and Umberger in front of him. I do not hesitate to trade Filatov and the Sens, who have a terrible time on offense badly need to replace Dany Heatley. Filatov would play for the Sens right now and he'd be on a top 2 line.

Now the question becomes value. I'd assume that Ottawa would need to add something to get Filatov from us. Lee is a quality defensive prospect with upside, but Filatov's upside can be massive. There'd have to be something else added.

Brian Lee is also out indefinitely with a strange illness. This makes a trade more unlikely right now. Many Sens fans are not satisfied with his current play.

According to Eric Smith the rumored deal is Filatov  + Crunchie for Lee, Ryan Shannon and a 2nd round pick. Shannon is intriguing, but I'd still wonder if we could get a better package. I'd prefer to move Filatov for a guy that will immediately help this team. Preferably a blueliner with more potential/ status than Brian Lee.

I'd hope we'd shop Filatov around a little more than this though, because I'd be very interested to see what other teams might be willing to offer for him. Hopefully this is a sign he's officially on the block.

I think the Islander, Panthers, Canadians, Maple Leafs, Thrashers, Hurricanes, Wild, Coyotes, and Predators would all have substantial interest in Filatov. Some of those teams have much more intriguing blueline options for us in my opinion. I'd hate to make a deal with Nashville, but if we could land a top blueliner, I'd consider it.

Debate. What do you think?

In all seriousness

I wouldn’t do the trade straight up, especially if Lee is hurt. No thanks. Ottawa should sweeten it a little bit.

Here's the thing:

Lee was demoted to the AHL to bring up Erik Karlsson (highly touted Swedish offensive d-man, best defenseman at last year’s World Juniors) who the org loves. Lee didn’t appear to get injured at any time, but hasn’t played since, if I’m correct.

If there’s an injury, I can’t see it being much of anything, considering it wasn’t done in game.

Hmmm. I’d really wonder what the market is for Filatov. I’d shop him a little more hopefully to see what other kind of packages we could get.

Carolina, Toronto, Minnesota, The Isles, Atlanta, Florida and Montreal would all likely have a ton of interest in Filatov.

Some of those teams have more established NHL d-men that could help us more right now.

I have to assume there’s a good market for him.

I should point out that most Sens fans were satisfied with Lee’s play. If you check Silver Seven, both the editors and our fanbase called Lee’s demotion a mistake, and felt he should be with the big club. It’s the Sens brass who aren’t satisfied with him (for whatever reason).

Don't Drop Filatov

We really don’t have much of a D change from last year and we have a defensive-minded coach. We don’t have any particularly high-powered players on offense besides Nash. Why on earth would trading a top O prospect be a good idea?

I realize the system didn’t much help out Filatov this year. But what happens if we put up a Nash-Brassard-Filatov line in the future? Let the kid get better – I think that line would give nightmares to other teams.

Yes, I’m a believer in Filatov, and I really think that throwing this kind of offense away for more D in the already D-sided system is foolish.

Bad Idea

While I doubt Filatov will ever wear a Jackets uniform unless Hitchcock is fired, this is still a bad idea for Columbus. Lee has essentially been a bust for the Senators. Like Klesla, he was drafted as an offensive defenseman, but it’s becoming less and less likely that he becomes that kind of player. Even when he’s been up with Ottawa this season, he wasn’t getting much, if any, powerplay time.

I can understand wanting to get something for a prospect the team has lost faith in, but this particular idea doesn’t make a lot of sense to me.

by Fanpuck33 on Dec 11, 2009 7:01 PM EST reply actions

Sens fan here with insight on Lee:

Lee is not, at this stage of development, an offensive defenceman. He’s got strong skating skills and decent size, but needs to develop a better mean streak to really shine.

When Lee plays for more than 5 games in an Ottawa uniform, he plays well. He rarely stands out as exceptional, but he also rarely looks bad. For some reason or another, and I don’t know why, Bryan Murray and Cory Clouston don’t like Lee. He never gets a fair shot at staying up with the club, probably because he’s not Anze Kopitar or Marc Staal (both drafted after him).

Ottawa is in dire need of a prospect like Filatov, but would, as you mention, need to add more. If it’s an offensive d-man the BJs need, I would assume Chris Campoli and Alex Picard are both also up for auction right now, and both are really coming into their own game (although Picard has, this year, been prone to bad turnovers). If its a forward, I’m sure Hitch would LOVE Jesse Winchester, but I think Murray and Clouston really like him, as he’s been great this year. Others who I could see traded would be Shannon or Peter Regin, Regin being the strongest defensively (he can strip the puck off opponents like it’s nobody’s business, but is a bit easy to bump off the puck when he has it).

cool

fast forward five years… filatov scores 50 goals, while we all try in vain to remember who we traded him for.

That’s just it for me- I think Nik can put up some major points in the NHL. I would be pissed if it wasn’t with the Jackets.

TRUTH!

Its a tough situation. We want the production out of him but he won’t be able to produce unless he becomes a rock on defense. And we certainly can’t give him away because he’ll help another team in a big way.

Two cents from another Sens fan

I think that Filatov is probably worth a bit more on the open market, but that being said its the Jackets that desperately need the help on defense right now. They’re 3rd last in the league in GAA with 3.25, ahead of only lowly Toronto and Carolina. The Heatley-less Sens are right in the middle of the league in offense with 2.75 GFA and probably want to add a veteran scorer a la Ray Whitney to immediately help with scoring, as Filatov wouldn’t not have a big enough impact.

I watch him play live a couple of times during the WJ’s last year and can say that at that level he excelled as he could out skate any competition and didn’t need to engage physically. I think that its a few years off before Filatov can make an impact in the NHL playing against men; he definitely would struggle to play the grinding, cycling style of play that Columbus, outside of Nash’s line, play.

As for Lee, he could be used now as a 6th D-man with 1st/2nd pairing PP time. Although he has a lower ceiling then Filatov, he’ll be a much less useless player now while hes working towards his potential.

All in all Sens would win this trade if its straight up, but it’d be pretty fair if its a package like Lee & Shannon for Filatov & a 3rd. Both teams would get new prospects to be excited about again.

To be honest, I would rather wait on Nik. With how well Russ is playing lately, especially after just extending his contract- i don’t think we need Lee. Obviously if we can get Lee for something other than Filatov I’d be happy. Chimmer and a pick maybe? I don’t know I’m just throwing it out there.

I’d even be hesitant giving up Chimmer. He’s one of the few veteran presences we have. Right now, we need it.

In my opinion

we should trade Filatov for Kaberle….i think that trade would be pretty fare. They want offense and we want defense

by brandon s on Dec 12, 2009 6:23 AM EST reply actions

Maneuvering around his NTC would be the challenge, but that is the type of deal I would like to see. I’m not sure if we are capable of taking on that much salary. Ideally, I’d like someone a little younger. Kaberle is 31.

Keep in mind that Modin’s 3+ million is coming off the books after this season. If we were to include a roster player along with Filatov, (Methot?) that would be almost what Kablerle’s cap hit is equal to.

I think that most of the extensions that we signed this off-season eat up most if not all of that, but then again I’m not writing the checks.

Kaberle would dramatically improve this team. He or a player like him would be the sort I’d want to deal Filatov for. We have plenty of youngish #4-5 defenders with potential on the team and in the system. IMO.
