Game 22: Battle in the Big Apple

Columbus Blue Jackets at New York Rangers, Nov 23, 2009 7:00 PM EST

One regulation loss in their last 10. Second in the Central. Powerplay ranked second in the NHL. Penalty kill improving. The Jackets seem to have figured things out, and after a string of poor play, the ship seems to have been righted. The Rangers on the other hand are struggling. They aren't putting up offense, and for a team coached by John Tortorella this is a huge concern. The Jackets have simply dominated the Eastern Conference over the last couple of seasons, so this game has the makings of a big win for the C, B and J.

I had been o-fer in my fearless predictions until last game, when I predicted RJ to have a big game and get off his snide. Hopefully that was the start to a run of correct predictions. I've predicted that Mase has a huge game and gets a doughnut, so here's hoping it comes true!

Same lineup as last game, with Sestito and Russ the healthies. Mike Blunden looked very good playing with Sammy and Chimmer, and I look for him to have another solid game. I wonder if Hitch will match the Pahlsson line or Nasher's line up against Prospal and Garborik?

Regardless- this should be a fun one at MSG. Go Jackets!

Fearless Prediction- Mason takes advantage of the Rangers scoring woes, and gets rewarded with his strong play of late. SHUTOUT!

From the Columbus Dispatch:

These are two teams going in opposite directions. The Jackets have only one regulation loss in their last 10 games. The Rangers have lost three straight and are struggling to score goals. They have been held to two goals or fewer in eight of the last 10 games.

Hows it goin?

I’m a regular on another SBN Blog. I’m just getting into the Jackets kinda hardcore. So I wanted to introduce myself, as you might just see a lot of me in the coming future.

So Mase got the start today. I hope whatever was bothering him is in the past. He deserves to be the No.1 Goalie for the Blue Jackets.

i didn't see a gamethread...

so, just wanted to say good job to D.Mac for netting the first one at MSG.

Not Learning?

Hey, stop predicting shutouts. Do you not remember what happened the last time you said such a thing? The Detroit Fiasco.

Just stop it. Don’t you learn?

I’m thinking that this game is far from over and the Jackets will bounce back. We need to tighten up more defensively to help Mase.

anyone know why Yahoo Sports, NHL.com, and ESPN are all showing blanks for this games boxscore? All the other games are fine, just this one?

by TylerA7707 on Nov 23, 2009 8:07 PM EST reply actions

yeah, don’t they usually have a game thread?

I dont know…Im just noticing that nothing is showing up for this game on fantasy hockey! Then I go to check the box score and after checking the 3 sites I listed a min ago, nothing!

Too many second and thirds shots on Mase…can’t have that. Too late now tho, Garon has taken place in net.

Might as well just yank the goalie all together if that is the kind of defense we are going to play.

yeah, it was destined….Boll gave it right back to Voros.

It seems to me that we got the lead and decided to take the rest of the night off to get ready for Montreal.

Saying it Again

DO NOT EVER PREDICT A SHUTOUT AGAIN. Ever.

by zekebud on Nov 23, 2009 8:31 PM EST reply actions

Haha you know what? I was saying the same thing. “Why the %#$@ did I have to predict a shutout”. Trust me- I am out of the shutout prediction business. Every time I do the Jackets get their shit pushed in. By the way guys- this is the Game Thread. I combine the previews with the game thread, with Clint doing the recaps.

I should add- would you guys like me to seperate the two threads, a preview in the afternoon, with a dedicated no-frills game thread?
