Game 20 Recap: Mase is Back!

This will be short and sweet today, because Clint was busy with real life and I am on my lunch break at work. It was a very physical game last night, a 4-1 win for the Jackets. Very much like the Edmonton game, the Jackets came out with their gloves half-off, there were three fights in the first period. It looked for a minute that Mase was making his way across the red line to join in on the festiviites, but backed off. Marty Turco stepped in between Nasher and Stephane Robidas, prompting Mase to start moving.

Another awesome game by Juice, he had two more goals, one on the powerplay and a beauty shorthanded with less than a second to go in the first period. Nasher scored a garbage goal later, and Raffi-who returned from injury last ngiht- got the other marker. You just know it was killing Raffi not to be able to muck it up because of his still-healing jaw.

As the title of this post suggests, Mase was strong in his first game back since the 9-1 drubbing against Detroit. To be fair, he wasn't very busy but nonetheless he made the saves he needed to, and the goal against was a beauty one-timer by Modano. I have never like Modano, but he can still bring the heat.

This game was the first of a five-game roadtrip, so it's crucial to get a win against a team that has had their number for the last few years.

Clint Clark Memorial Mancrush Award: Dorsett, for looking like he got sniped out. The guy was absolutely on another planet after he got hit by James Neal. I jest a bit, but seriously hopefully he's ok. He was an absolute warrior out there last night. Neal has a hearing at noon today.

Clint Clark Memorial Whipping Boy Award: It's hard to find one when you have such a collective effort, but I'll give it to Vermette, only because I didn't notice him as much last night.

Thoughts? Let's hear 'em.

The hit on Dorsett was far and away one of the cheapest shots I’ve ever seen. Worse than the hit Hordichuk put on Boller earlier in the year. Neal should be seeing a suspension and a hefty fine. He and Ott are tough, I won’t deny it, but their antics are questionable I believe. Someone could really get hurt because of their carelessness.

Neal attributed the hit to his speed and that it was unintentional – you know, the same old jazz. If the league is trying to do away with these types of incidents, they need to send a message. And I don’t remember who it was, but whoever took a cheap shot at Torres is a COWARD. Takes a big man to try to bully a guy with a facemask on…

Mancrush(es) of the night: Dorsett, Mase, Juice. These three split the honor in my book. Dorsett gets the award for getting off the ice, albeit with help, without being strapped to a stretcher. That hit was nasty, I really hope he’ll be ok. This kid is a trooper, and one hell of a teammate.

Mason, Mason, Mason…Thats just the game he needed to have. Glove save, glove save, stick save, kick save, flipping cartwheel behind the back 360 tomahawk save. He was doing it all. The shutout would’ve been nice but Modano’s goal was just a rocket. He’s starting to come around and turn into the kid we admired and drooled over all last year.

Speaking of being back in a big way, the man of the night; Kristian Huselius. His goal with .3 seconds left in the first was spectacular. He showed some incredible patience with such little time left. 5 points in three games, I think. Welcome back!

Whipping boy of the night: Hm. I’m going to leave this award alone on this day. Excellent game all around by the team. Keep it rolling in Nashville!!!

Some of us still miss Juice up here (Calgary). He has some games where he’s off the mark…but when he’s on, he’s tremendous.

I don’t think I’d call Rick’s goal a garbage goal…it was the first of the game!

Anyways, great game, glad to see the boys not back down to any of the Stars players, hope Dorsett is ok.

Most exciting moment of the night was when I saw Mase skate all the way across the ice…woulda loved to see him get in the action

My definition of garbage goal is a jam play in front of the net, where the puck comes loose and gets poked in the net. As opposed to a beauty goal, which of course is a nice play or plays leading up to the goal itself.

I see what you are thinking though, that by garbage I meant unimportant.

I would have loved to see Mase and Turco go at it!

Too bad the ref saw him from the blueline and told him to go back…WEAK. Turco had no right to jump in there.

Also, kudos on the pic above Mike. Looks like Torres is staring a hole through Turco. If he could talk, I’m sure he’d be giving him a verbal thrashing.

Blazer, I agree that the league needs to step up and do something about the cheap shots. I don’t understand how Neal’s “speed” caused him to throw an elbow into the back of Dorsett’s head. Anyway, I think it’s weak that they only gave him two games for that hit. I think it should be an eye for an eye, if Dorsett misses 2 games, the suspension should be 2 games. If he misses 4, the suspension should be 4. I wish the league would get rid of these bums who don’t respect other players and don’t respect the game. Not sure that Neal falls into that category yet, let’s hope he learns from his mistake.

But what happens if Dorsett misses no time? Neal would get away scott free with no punishment other than getting kicked out of the game. I think the NHL should adopt something similiar to what the MLB does when it comes to substance abuse.

First offense you miss X number of games, second offense you miss more games etc. I think it should look something like this:

  • First offense: heavy fine
  • Second offense: 3 game suspension
  • Third offense: 5 game suspension

The more offenses, the more time missed. Everyone wins.
