Filatov Commentary

Mike was able to weigh in with his very solid opinion on the Filatov situation and I thought I'd weigh in with a post of my own. There will be similarities from Mike's but also differences. We are not clones. In the honor of SNL, Mike you ignorant slut.

Not a big deal.

Wait what is that you say? You have got to be kidding me. Fire Hitch. Fire Howson.

It's not a big deal.

You are short sighted and this will hurt Filatov in the team in the long run.

It's not a big deal.

Here are the facts. Nikita Filatov is not the difference between playoffs and no playoffs. Cup run vs. no cup run. For all intents and purposes he is a non-factor for us this year.

But what about Tavaras, Stamkos, Kane,..... Filatov has to be better than them right?

It could be argued, but sure Filatov is better than those players, but tell me which of the Islanders, Lightning, Thrashers, are better than the Blue Jackets.

Filatov is not one of the best 4 wings on the team. He might not even be one of the best 6, so why play him as if he is such. Tavaras is one of the best wings. Stamkos is the 2nd best center, as is Kane. I will admit, if Filatov were on another team, a lesser team, the 03-04 Blue Jackets, he would be playing 13-15 a night. He would be one of the best young players in the league.

So why is this not a big deal?

Filatov is the same person he was yesterday. The same player with the same skills. The positive is that he has trade value. Really decent trade value. His trade value is the same as if he played here the rest of the year. For the next 2-3 years Filatov's value to this team might only be trade value. We can move him at the deadline. Move him tomorrow. Move him at the draft. The value does not diminish. Zherdev's value pretty much bottomed out and we were able to get Fedor Tyutin. Filatov's value would be far past this. If we move him at the deadline for Tomas Kaberle, who would be complaining? If we flipped him to the Islanders for a 1st round pick +, who would be complaining? His value is still the same.

So the heat on Hitch?

I can sense it, and I'm not going to defend Hitch, I'm not sure what his relationship with Filatov is, but I will not endorse him sacrificing wins for Filatov's development. No way. This is how Hitch sees it, the hardest part for Hitch is though is that he wants to WIN EVERY SHIFT. We are better off at our stage in our development to have this mentality. If we were say in the San Jose world of development, you can run Filatov out there because, hey you know we are in the playoffs. If you are in the New York Islanders world of development you can run Filatov out there because, hey lets sell some jerseys.

Heat on Howson?

Maybe some, I think he has been overly hesitant to not include Filatov in trade talks. He's always mentioned him with the untouchables. He needed to see this as a possible scenario down the pike. Half of CBJ faithful did. Maybe I'm wrong, maybe Howson feels differently than I suspect.

Heat on Filatov?

1)He's 19 years old and living far away from home, earning 800K a year, getting about 6 minutes of ice and contributing 0 to the team. He could do this or

2)He could be 19 years old, be a local celeb, earn 3-4 million a year, get 20 minutes of ice time, and be a heart and soul player on a team.

Truth be told I'd have a hard time turning down option 2.

Filatov wants to be a NA hockey player and he likely will be better next camp than he is right now. Even if he is on the team at that time.

Why isn't Filatov not in the AHL? Because (assumption) Filatov has already made it crystal clear it is NHL or Russia. This ultimately is not the type of attitude we need right now. He said in camp getting minutes shouldn't be an issue because he knows what he can do. He hasn't shown it. Not in practice either. No player can dictate how much time they should be playing. No player is bigger than the team and no player is bigger than winning.

He can be a good player for us next year or he can help acquire a good player for us. Either way I'm happy. Outside of a few, I look at players like real estate. Sell high.

Ultimately I'm not mad at any party in this case. It is a situation that we will move past. It is not a big deal.

Great post Clint. I posted in Mike’s also about my thoughts on all this. I wish him well the rest of the year in Russia, and I hope he comes back strong next fall. He is better of “improving” his skills where he is guaranteed ice time instead of proving he belongs on the ice with a real professional hockey team. But hey, what do I know.

he's done in union blue

hitch never gave this kid a shot

so when he got his nightly 8 seconds of ice time… he was playing not to make a mistake which is no way to play. he got stapled to the bench after the slightest error (while juice pulls down 3.75 a year). if i was him i’d bolt too.

my guess is that howson is furious here. he lost a #6 pick for what will probably amount to nothing. why would someone trade for his rights? one big year in the khl and he’s a superstar… why would he leave?

and i think its sort of foolish to forsake someone with his offensive upside.. especially with our inability to win by more than one goal.

"yo this is a great sig and imma let you finish, but i've had the lulziest quotes of all time, OF ALL TIME!"

He would leave because he wants to play in the NHL. Its his dream to play with the best talent in the world and he can only do that in this league.

according to his contract, he is not done in Union Blue. He’ll be back, because blazer fan is right, and the Jackets are is only NHL choice.

Rational discourse on this subject? You, my friend, must be following the wrong team.

In any case, things likely could have been handled better, however, we’re talking about a player whose one dimension was putting up points. Said player has the same number of points as Jan Hejda (who admittedly has gotten a ton more time, but certainly isn’t known for putting up big numbers) and Derick MacKenzie (who has less TOI than Filatov). Heck, even Mathieu Roy in his seven games put up more points than Filatov.

Obviously, we’re not privy to what’s going on in practice, but the last shift I saw of him on the ice was pretty horrible. Anyway, if he’s not going to be playing here, he may as well be playing somewhere. This doesn’t necessarily mean he’ll never play as a Jacket again. And if he doesn’t it doesn’t mean we won’t get anything out of him. And if we don’t, we certainly won’t be the first team in the league that this has happened to.

For the here and now (which is amazingly important on any day other than today – if I ever even try to talk about the future of this club, I hear the “we’re promised that every year” spiel… can’t win for losing on that front it seems), we’re out 2-0-2 worth of offense and a little bit of depth. As far as this season goes, it’s more or less a nonissue.

Yahoo! sports and NHL Fanhouse have articles up regarding the Filatov situation. One talks about his desire to return to Russia and the other talks about how valuable he is on the trade market.

Personally, I think the deals done, lets move on with the rest of our season. I seriously don’t think Howson would trade Filatov and risk not having that extra dynamic player on the roster to help in the future. That is, afterall, what Howson has been working to do recently.

There are more important things going on now that Filatov is on his way back to his home. Lets be happy for him, wish him the very best, then welcome him back with open arms next fall.

Desire

From what I’ve seen personally at the arena during games and from his own comments he basically quit four games in this season (Why I’m Leaving Columbus For Russia on Puck Daddy on Yahoo).

He’s not interested in learning the defensive side of the game, only scoring. If he’s not willing to work with the team as a single unit then he’s a distraction. The best thing may be for him to go.

Hopefully he comes back but I don’t think he will learn much defense in the KHL. If he doesn’t come back hopefully we can get something for him. (I still say his two points this season would have been nice to include in a trade for Heatly’s 100 pts.)

my 2 cents

I have been a lifetime Hartford Whalers fan, before that team moved to Carolina. When that happened, I was living in Columbus and adopted the Blue Jackets as my new hockey team (I was not about to root for the Hurricanes, having also grown up a life-long Cleveland Browns fan).

I claim to know nothing about how to run an NHL organization. I never played hockey. But I have followed DIE-HARD my favorite 2 NHL teams for over 23 years (and have only witnessed 8 playoff appearances in 21 years). I think I am qualified to state that 1 player does not make a successful NHL team. Ken Hitchcock has brought this team to instant credibility. He should be revered with ultimate respect. He might be stubborn, and he might clash with personalities…BUT he should be treated as GOLD in a US dollar market. I like Filatov. I liked Zherdev. I think both are tremendously talented. I think both share similarities and differences. BUT, the team will not gain or lose their identity without them on the roster. Yes, the Jackets are always looking for improved offense and yes, they have young players who we rely upon to provide the team with offense.

But, when any of us true fans look at this roster, and see how these players respond to the philosophies of this organization as a whole, (under Howson, Hitchcock, Murphy, Agnew, Noel, etc…) I think it is clear that we HAVE DIRECTION. Patience is a virtue, and success is never a guarantee. But I trust this team a lot, and I think it would be a shame to ever undermine what is developing with the organization right now. Filatov’s come and go…but the development of a team is hand-crafted by smart NHL people. And for icing on the cake…Rick Nash signed a long-term deal here too. He must like something about this town more than “Hang on Sloopy”/

This may be true, but I’m sure Voracek just loves it because of Hang on Sloopy. Goofy kid and his constant oldies singing…
