Game 18 Recap: Duck Hunt

Okay things were better. Outside of giving up double digit goals I think that would have been true tonight. I didn't think we played that great, we still have a long way to go. A win feels good even thought it needed to be in a shootout. Tonight the Jackets down the Ducks 3-2.

To be honest I'm surprised by the Ducks struggles early this year. Last year down the stretch after the deadline they rebuilt, reloaded and played great hockey. I think the thinning d and the loss of Beauchemin hurts, but I was expecting much better things from Anaheim. Bottom in the Western Conference, I'm shocked honestly.

To open us up tonight it looked like our guys were nervous. No doubt laying another egg in front of the home crowd would rack the nerves. Anaheim knew this, they likely made a point of coming out of the gates on fire. After killing a couple early key penalties we definitely played a better game. The end of the first was very good, everything else was decent.

Welcome back Kristian Huselius the hockey player. He looked very good tonight, back to what we need from him. Easily his best game this season. He holds the puck on a string and creates space for his teammates with the puck. Cashing in on the powerplay and connecting in the shootout was all icing on the cake. A great game from the Juice tonight.

Big props to Mathieu Garon. After your starting goalie gives up 8, you want to stop the bleeding. Considering Mason's somewhat erratic play this year, it is a great feeling to have a capable backup that can play. Garon might be playing for the

I want a Cannon reader to get a nice video capture of the Rick Nash leg lift shootout  winning decoy/near whipeout. A big night from 61 tonight. He quietly is putting together 100 point type of numbers. With good health he will shatter all team records this year.

If anyone has Klesla's injury statistics this year I'd also be interested in looking at those. That has to be at least the 5th trainer visit. He's missed 0 games. 0 periods I think. Rusty needs to take care of himself.

Mancrush of the Night: Mathieu Garon. Outside of one game, he's been stellar this year. It certainly takes the pressure off of Mase.

Whipping Boy tonight needs to be Derick Brassard. We need more out of him, it is that simple. He's the type of player that if he isn't contributing offensively then he isn't contributing. His turnover on the second goal was terrible.  Hitch is pulling his ice time back and it is the right call. We need old Derick back.

We bounce back tonight. We absolutely need this win. The theatrics are good tonight too. It builds some positive, fun.

Jackets fans, we played a decent 60 minutes. Happy? Thoughts? Dissatisfied? Fire Away!

Fun game to watch- Brass and Jake were flying out there, they had a ton of chances too bad they couldn’t bury one. Of course the top line was fantastic, this was a great game for Juice and Nash’s entry-to-triple-sowcow-to-snapshot diversion tactic was brilliant. Garon’s glove save was a thing of beauty.

I’m with you Josh, I’m celebrating Nash’s Captain Morgan pose in the shootout with my own interpretation of the Capn. Or whatever. Go Jackets! Go Capn (with Coke Zero o’course)

we got better as the game wore on but the first 10 mins were garbage, no intensity at all. I get it if you’re nervous after a brutal loss at home but you need to come out swinging and we didn’t. That’s the only reason we didn’t win this in regulation.

Anyone Else Concerned?

I had never really thought of it before but this week I’ve heard about four different people at different times mention that this may be the beginning of what led Hitch out of Dallas and Philadelphia. The team gets tired of the system and they just don’t respond to the coach and then the team has to move him out to get another coach.

I really, really hope that isn’t the case here. The paranoid doom-sayer part of me can easily see it happening, especially when a team can’t come out against a division rival that embarrassed them in their first playoff appearance. On the other hand, the tiny optimisitc side of me replies that we wouldn’t have as many players extending their stay here if they didn’t intend to play it out the way they are expected to.

Does anyone else have any thoughts on this?

I don’t think so. This is a team that is hungry to win and has played the best hockey under Hitch. I think Nash really likes Hitch and Nash sets the tone in the dressing room. The time Hitch is losing it is when he loses Nash.

I’m not in the dressing room, but I’ve never heard anything about players clashing with him.

Quick thoughts

A win is a win is a win. It wasn’t really pretty but by God, I’ll take it.

Nash’s goal was spectacular. I highly doubt he “blew a tire” like Rimer said. He’s one of very very few players who can pull a move like that off. What a special talent. Fantastic.

I agree with Brass being the whipping boy. He NEEDS to step it up and play the way he did in his 30 games last year. Maybe the decrease in ice time will do him some good. Look at Filatov, while he’s not scoring a bajillion points yet, he’s getting more and more chances to play. I believe he was out on one of the last couple PPs we had. We’ll see Brass bounce back soon.

To Cannonfire, you raise a point thats worth discussing. I don’t think the team gets tired of the system they’re playing in. Hitch runs a tight ship and the players respect that. The guys that have been around during previous head coaches know there is a fire and passion that Hitch has that they haven’t seen before. As long as the team continues to progress and get deeper and deeper into the playoffs and win some championships, Hitch will be around.

Fret not, Jackets fans. Every team goes through rough patches. Their confidence is going up again and the division lead is in sight.
