Game 17 Recap: Is this still the playoffs?

Last year in our first trip to the playoffs I made the haul up to Detroit. As luck would have it Clay Hall and Anthony Rothman stopped me for an interview. They wanted to know the keys to the game... I said 1. Need to have a strong forecheck to put pressure on their d  2. Score early. These keys certainly did not happen in that serious... they did not happen tonight. If you didn't see the game or see a box score... let's just say we lost by more than 5 goals...

This game could have easily blended into last years playoff series. Well on second thought, it was much worse. The Wings weathered all of our scoring chances, went down the ice and practically scored at will. Nice puck luck, bad goaltending, d-zone turnovers. They scored on all of them tonight and made us look silly. I sat watching, hoping the game would end and hoping we wouldn't give up any more goals. I'm sure the players felt the same way.

Not one, but two of our players were hit with slapshots in the head... that has to sum up the night.

I'll get it out of the way early. Steve Mason was not good. I'm not sure if there is an explanation for his inconsistency this season, but it has to be unsettling. You can see the difference in team play when they are completely confident in the goaltending. When you give up 8 goals in a game... You didn't do well, in fact you flat out sucked.

The Red Wings do things that it seems no other teams do. Little things. Little spins, little flip passes toward the goal, and they always seem to find one-timers on the rush. Regardless of their personnel they always seem to play like this. Not to much superior puck possession and board play.Their special-magic white jerseys also disguise what would look to the naked eye as penalties. The non-goalie interference call isn't even worth arguing since we got destroyed.

The Big Plus Jan Hejda and the top line were not good tonight against Datysuk. I know with Huselius is out of the lineup, but our top line has been spotty in shutdown duty. To have success in the playoffs... this HAS to improve.

Mancrush of the Night: I'll pick out Klesla tonight. Sure, the defense was terrible and he wasn't good, but the dude keeps putting his face in front of slapshots. He has seriously large gonads. He's been in a heap after blocking a shot for three games straight. Somehow Hejda was -3 and Klesla was 0 and they were paired together...

Whipping Boy tonight... Let's just go with the team. The got shaken and rattled early and the Wings went for blood and got it.

I'm sure you have them... comments? Dare I say, Fire Away!

I did watch the game tonight and Im only stating the obvious when I say it was ugly. There were a couple times when it felt as if the Jackets were swinging a little momentum, at least towards getting their self respect back, but then bad goal and it all went to hell. Detroit is in the heads of Columbus

i was in 119......yep.

I left after it became (sigh) 8-1. The bad thing about being in 119, it was attack twice for Detroit. Ouch. Mason was horrible. Worst I’ve ever seen from him. Klesla should stop inviting the puck to dinner. And last but not least, what the hell was that for a 1,000 game night? Filatov didn’t play horrible. I think I saw everyone take a face off except mason tonight.

Where has the intensity gone?

At the beginnig of the year we saw the Jackets team we were all looking for, hard hitting, great PK, and best of all winning. Where is that team now? The hits were pathetic last night, the PK was non-existent, and a AAA PeeWee team could have played better defense. The Jackets allowed guys to skate un-opposed in the corners, and down the slot, it was sad to watch. You cannot play that way against Detroit especially when thay were angry after having lost to Toronto.

I love’em though. Let’s get back in the drivers seat and get going, it is still early and we are right up there in the division.

Just a heads up...

Clint and all of the Columbus faithful. Drew here. I’m a Red Wings blogger who writes for both Winging it in Motown and my own personal blog, The Nightmare on Helm Street. Just thought I would let you know that I used these comments in my “Kick ‘Em When They’re Down” section this morning (http://animaldrew.blogspot.com/2009/11/kick-em-when-theyre-down-1111-vs-cbj.html) . It’s nothing personal, all in good fun.

Keep up the good work and we’ll see you guys again real soon.

Gerrad Gallant is back behind the bench??

Tell me why we think dump and chase is going to be effective this year? it hasnt worked for the past 8 years what makes them think it will this year?! Our first couple games this year we setup a good break out, carried it into their zone and setup shop firing tons of shots on net from the point with a big man screening the goalie…now were back to dump and chase. Didnt realize Gallant was back coaching! And secondly i will say what most think but wont admit as stubborn Ohio sports fans….Mason is not that good yet! Everyone thought at the end of last season when he started turning into swiss cheese he was worn out and tired from so many games…HELLO!! Marty Brodeur and other guys almost twice his age play almost the whole season! Your telling me a 20 year old kid was tired!? No instead the rest of the league figured out how to beat him! He comes way too far out to challenge a shot and ALMOST ALWAYS leaves a rebound for an easy gaping net goal! He always seems to be out of position too! And for the nay-sayers who claim “well he has some awesome stops hes just in a slump…” EVERY GOALIE has awesome saves from time to time! He is not ready for this level and we need to find a REAL goalie soon or we are in big big trouble and you can kiss the organization goodbye…the building is still not full every game after our good start and 1st ever playoff showing. If we miss again this year, i hate to say it but they are gone! GET A REAL GOALIE FOR ONCE IN OUR ORGANIZATIONS HISTORY! We got embarrassed by a lack luster wings team with tons and i mean tons of injuries to KEY players!

Worst. Game. Ever.

I know I’ve said this about San Jose and Edmonton earlier this year, but THIS was downright awful. I hope the team gets a case of the forgetsies real soon. This stuff isn’t going to fly anymore. Next time WILL be different. Hitch isn’t going to be a happy camper the next few days, I’m sure.

Yeah, there were a lot of bad hops, redirects, screens blah blah blah. Thats why we have defensemen; to move their team out of the way. No energy at all. No effort. No fire. For once, I can’t blame the refs for anything. This was a complete meltdown.

Gotta get back to it, learn, and move it. Kill them next time!

He has seriously large gonads.

(^^ its because they swelled up from getting hit in them when trying to block shots)

Columbus til I die, Columbus til I die. I know I am, I swear I am, Columbus til I die!

In fairness I had most of the blog written when they had 6 goals on us (to save time) :-)

To that point they were just “spotty”

Thanks for reading.
