The dust has settled and we will face the Detroit Red Wings in the first round. This is truly a dream matchup for us.

The Cannon will be providing some analysis in the coming days, but for now I'm just going to let it sink in.

2008-09 Western Conference Playoff Match-ups

1 San Jose vs 8 Anaheim
2 Detroit vs 7 Columbus
3 Vancouver vs 6 St. Louis
4 Chicago vs 5 Calgary

I will update with more details such as dates and times as soon as they are released by the NHL.

After going 3-3 against Detroit in the regular season, I'm sure most fans think this is a good match-up for the first round. Maybe. But I look at the Jackets' record over the last few weeks and their overall play during the same period and I'm concerned. Unless a lot of sloppy play gets corrected and fast, a short exit from the play-offs is in the Jackets' near future. That said, thanks to Hitch, Howsom and Mr. Mac (wherever you are) for bringing us a team we can be proud of and for the hope of future success.

Blue Jackets and Wings both have 3 wins in their last 10 games.

True. There is a slight difference, however. Detroit are the defending champions. Don't get me wrong. After eight years of "WTF was that?", I'm overjoyed. And I would do handsprings at Broad & High, if the Jackets get to round 2. I have concerns, however, and, should the Jackets get eliminated by Detroit, I will not be disappointed because this is just the first step. Our team will get better!
