Around SBN: Chan Sung Jung Wins Thriller Over Dustin Poirier

Bumps and Bruises

Aaron Portzline gave us an injury update in his blog today, to sum it up:

Three guys will be out until next weekend: Peca with "general soreness", Modin with back spasms, and Foote with a sore hamstring.

Fritsche, who was suffering from a hip pointer, will resume skating this weekend. Likewise with Vyborny, who was out with a knee injury suffered in the game against Nashville.

I'm not too keen on the "general soreness" keeping Peca out for a week. All of our aging HOF'ers are hurt and the only one playing recently (Feds) looked like he was ready for his rocking chair.

I totally agree. To me, general soreness should limit you to a couple of days off. Peca's been out for a whle now, and will be for a while longer.

We might need guys like Brassard and Voracek to play if Peca and Modin aren't 100% by opening night.

If Foote's hammy is still bothering him, looks like Russell could get a shot.

Having seen Russell play in the two preseason games at the Nat I would say he's ready to go with zero questions asked. The kid is the picture of composure and I imagine he hasn't had a giveaway yet. If B&V are on the ice opening night we're in for a scary season :-)

You're right about Brass and V. Long term, it means our veterans aren't playing at 100%, whether it be because of poor play or injury.

That said, things could be very surprising if they are on the team, they could have a season similar to Stastny and Wolski in Colorado last year, where they were important contributors to a team that made a late surge for the playoffs.

I think maybe the issue with B&V (if we have to use them) is that we have such a cluster**** in the bottom lines that the expectation would be top line minutes (which is better than 4th line minutes I suppose).

It would be great if they could produce night in and night out... I'm just not sure it can happen. It will be interesting to see what they look like by the time Sunday's game rolls around! I guess I should just cross my fingers that Modin & Peca feel better soon... although what's the benefit of playing veterans who haven't skated for two weeks?

I really hope Modin and Peca return soon, I think that it would be good for them to get some game action before the season starts. By then we'll likely have seen more cuts, so we'll have a good idea where people will fit in to start the season.

If Brass and V are on the team, i can see them getting scoring line minutes. Hitch and Howson know better than to leave these guys on the team and put them on the fourth line.
